AIBU?

Mary Jane question

Our neighbour's son went off the rails for few years, seems to be bouncing back, which is quite an accomplishment for a 17 years old.
He kept one habbit though and that's smoking cannabis in front of their house ( we are in a semi with them) with his friends.
Would I be BU to ask my neighbour to tell him to be more discreet? The stench of the weed is not exactly easy to hide and I feel like we are going to get the munchies from passive smoking soon. On the other hand, his parents went through hell trying to make him see the reason and I don't want them to feel uncomfortable, especially as every time there was a burglary in the estate, fingers were pointed at the boy for giving tip-offs.

Of course not.

I don't know if there'll be a slew of "it's illegal so report him" but, for me that's extremely OTT.

I'm reasonably liberal and 'experimented' at uni. Nothing for a couple of decades now. However, I'd be very hypocritical and expect it to be kept well away from me, my house and family etc.

edit: "Would I BU to ask my neighbour to tell him to be more discreet"?

Of course you wouldn't be unreasonable.

No reporting the boy, don't want that at all. But I'll have a discussion with the neighbour and ask him for a bit of a descretion. Thanks.

Have they got room for a shed in the back garden?

They have a shed etc. but they are definitely not growing :D I wish they would at least we'd get some of the heat through the walls [grins]
I don't think the parents want to let him and his pals into the gardens. He's really improved and trying to turn his life but he will never be an angel and they know his limitations and happy with the progress he's made.

Hahaha!

I didn't mean for growing purposes :-) I was just thinking that maybe it would solve the problems re: them smoking outside if they had a designated smoking area!

I can appreciate that they probably don't want to be seen to actively encourage it tho.

Would you feel comfortable speaking to him directly in the first instance? I understand you may not though! Just think he may appreciate it if you mention it to him rather than them as he is nearly an adult, especially if they've had a tough time with him the last few years. He may feel like he always has people moaning at him & may respond better to you having a quiet word with him directly, rather than feeling he has his parents moaning at him again.

Was going to also suggest you speak to him directly. What he is doing is illegal so you are doing him a favor by asking him nicely and not just reporting.

Not U, talk to your neighbours but just don't mention the weed. It would be as bad if they were just smoking, so just get them to ask if they can stop smoking outside as the "smoke" smell is getting difficult to deal with.

Ladycrazycat, that's actually what I decided in the last hour. I think it's better for him too, he can make his own decision. Just don't want him to think I'm threatening him with reporting if he doesn't stop or whatever. I certainly wouldn't be so relaxed if it were hard drugs.
