AIBU?

To feel guilty there are no b/w photos of dd1?

We have 3 dds aged nearly 15, 13 and 9. We've always taken a lot of photos of them and have framed prints of all 3 around the house plus albums etc.

However in the dining room we have professional b/w photos of dds 2 and 3 taken when they were babies. When dd2 was born I found this particular photographer who specialised in babies so we went for it. I THINK they also included dd1 who was 2 at the time in a few shots but we ended up not buying these.

The photos of dd3 4 years later we're taken by a different photographer whose style I liked. Again a small baby specialist.

I feel very guilty there is nothing similar of dd1. She's made a few light hearted comments but I'm worrying it does really bother her. It's obviously too late for baby photos but I thought maybe of finding some nice photos of her and having b/w enlargements made. Or taking her to have some nice studio shots of her now?

Should add we had some beautiful photos taken off all of them at 10, 8 and 4 which we have up but it's just the lack of b/w baby photos.

Please be honest if I've been thoughtless or insensitive and what's the best way to rectify things?

Well you should have bought the ones with DD1 in them so at least you had that, but you didn't so you can't change that. I would suggest taking her to a studio and getting her hair and makeup done for some nice photos if she's into that.

Just sort out a few B&W ones of your DD1 as a baby and bung them up if it's that big a deal.

Can you not find a nice baby picture of dd1 and print it off in b&w?

You can do loads with editing these days, I have gorgeous studio b/w pics of dd2 but as there is 15 yrs between her and dd1 and DS their studio baby pics have a totally different look, however I scanned them and edited them so I now have a lovely matched set of facial close ups in b/w of all 3.

Can you have printed b/w enlargements from a standard colour print rather than from a negative or electronic version? Would somewhere like snappy snaps do that?

Is it that you have no baby pictures of DD1 up, or just no fancy black and white studio ones?

I had a lingering and completely irrational resentment that there were no baby photos of me in the family photo albums - loads of my three siblings - until I tumbled to the fact that it was the late 70s and all photos of me were stored on slides. I then had the pleasure of seeing lots of pictures of me looking like a hairless alien

If the answer is no baby photos up, just print off and frame a nice one? Or take her for a studio session at the age she is now?

Do you not have the negatives any more? Probably the best way to get a black and white enlargement would be to take the negatives, get them digitised, and then use software to make the electronic image black and white.I'm not sure an enlargement based on a print would work out well (though you could get it scanned in and turned black and white without resizing).

You would be able to scan in colour pics and digitally switch them to B&W.

If the professional photographer is still in business he may well still have the photos you didn't buy. Professionals don't usually give the negatives, but keep them for possible future orders. Worth enquiring.

Yes YABU and so is DD.

You sound like a well to do and caring family. I say well to do as not everyone goes to professional studio photographers and gets framed prints of their small babies.

You also sound caring because of this thread. Make sure DD IS actually bothered about it. But IF she is, just tell her you didnt know about the photographer when she was born and hence you couldnt get her photographed retrospectively when she was already 2 when you found them.

I never got the point of expensive professional photographs of young babies when as bobburglar99 says, you just look like a hairless alien lol!

Far better to get them done older as you begin to look like you, rather than a hairless alien.

You perhaps should have got her photographed when you found the photographer at 2+. They would have been great.

Scan them in then open any old photo editing software on your computer and check for a tool to turn black and white. If you cant find one then turn the saturation down then send it off to snapfish or somewhere to be printed in whatever size you like.
