About DP Watching Animal Cruelty Video

DP was sat next to me on the laptop when I noticed he was reading an article about a cat being set alight by a firework. He then started watching the accompanying video in which you see what happened to the cat. As soon I saw he was watching the video I told him to turn the laptop away from me and said that I didn't know why he was watching it. He said he found it intriguing but it has really upset me. He has gone to bed in a huff because I wasn't happy about it.

I know watching stuff like that isn't illegal and he can look at what he wants but I hate animal abuse and don't know why anyone would want to see an animal being murdered.

Am I being melodramatic?

From an objective standpoint it's not really any different to watching some news footage of war zones, famine sufferers or after natural disasters.
I can see why he found it intriguing, equally I can see why you found it upsetting. I think you've both overreacted here. It's an emotive subject, you both are experiencing natural reactions.

I'm Vegan, am appalled by any form of cruelty.

Things like that also intrigue me.

I watch some stuff, so I can explain what it is I'm against, but some stuff, animal and human stuff, I watch out of curiosity.

I've sobbed at some of what I've seen, but it reminds us of what people are capable of.

I will still look at news items concerning animal cruelty. If I adopt the "Oh, I can't bear to watch that" it doesn't mean it doesnt happen .

Don't imagine I get off on it though. I will reach a saturation point that will numb me.
But they spark my resolve to continue to abhore any abuse.

One of the grimmest (and I've mentioned this before on MN) are some of the Rodeos in the USA that are put on for high security prisoners.
Want to see a beautiful wild horse saddle,bridled and on it's side as quick as possible by six blokes who would rob you rape you and kill you before you could see "Yikes".

Thanks for the replies. I guess being curious is more of a natural reaction to others than to me so I won't be too harsh on him

It's not curious, it's sick minded, a normal person (like you did ) would avoid looking at it. It is a bit sadistic to even consider watching it, and it shows how much respect he has for you to just put it on while you were sat next to him.

I couldn't watch it,i'd be in tears, i'd want to do the same to the people who did it.
I don't think he was getting off on it or disrespecting you, there is a bit of morbid fascination, also to see how these individuals can even think doing something like this is ok.

I know what people are capable of. I don't need to watch videos of it.

You might watch news footage of war horrors and suchlike, but would you watch video of torture? Or cruelty to children? As in, the actual acts?

No different, just because it's animals.

Your husband is behaving badly because he's been caught and criticised for doing something really unpleasant. I would be very upset with him.

I have to watch these things as part of my job. You become quite hardened to it after a while and focus instead on preventing it from happening again.

I can't, and never have, watched an animal cruelty video. Too upsetting and It would would make me incandescent with rage.

I appreciate that people are curious and are not all going to turn into serial killers just because they watch them but by doing so creates a market for them no?

I wouldn't want to watch it either. And I'd be a about someone who described a filmed incident of animal cruelty as "intriguing". I'd be asking him if he's a psychopath in the making.

The world needs to be made up of people who would watch it and those who wouldn't.

If everyone was like me and refused to read details about animal cruelty it would all be hidden away and not discussed for upsetting people.

I think it's ok to have a natural curiosity.

The only people who NEED to watch shit like this are people with the power to arrest and shoot the fuckers involved.

For the rest of us, the description of "cat" plus "firework" is sufficient for our imaginations to do the rest. (Thanks brain.)

Sharing videos of animals being tortured, people being beheaded, etc etc does nothing for social justice. It's just morbidity for the YouTube generation.

I think that it depends on the context. If he clicked on it following up from an article about cruelty to animals, and maybe with a warning that it may be upsetting, and he decided to click on it, then maybe that's one thing. If he searched for "hilarious cat gets set on fire", then maybe that's a bit different? Maybe it depends on his reactions as well, if he gets some enjoyment out of watching them? I couldn't watch. I can't even read descriptions when torture to animals or people are concerned. I find the psychology of it too disturbing.

If I was reading the article I would probably ly watch the video too. I can't explain why. I'm sure thousands of people also watched it. I'm sure they aren't all serial killers in the making or kitten stomping fetishists.

It's just morbid curiosity and availability. I would be appalled of course. Probably cry. But I would watch it.

People are strange.

I just find that a bit disgusting, I can't even get myself to read about stuff like that, let alone watch it :( I would be seriously angry about it tbh.

I know what you mean, OP, my DH watches some weird stuff on YT. I just ask him to turn the volume right down.

The other day we were driving in his car and he had Katie Hopkins on the radio. I can't stand the sound of her voice and asked him to change the station. He refused.

It annoyed me and I told him to get Bluetooth headphones so I don't have to listen to the crap (knowing he won't).

It depends on who they were filmed by.

As said, I'm Vegan, used to be Vegetarian, then watched stuff to do with farming. Some of the animal videos are filmed by undercover animal rights activists, including dog fights etc.

I can watch an animal cruelty video (deending on context), but I can't add to that cruelty.

I was a CP SW and have had to read the medical reports, look at pictures of disturbing stuff, I've listened to the recordings of children being abused. I'm lucky that I never had a case were filming occurred.

I find that I'm distant from the stuff that I look at, outside of work, I don't look at stuff involving children, except for the Chinese Dying Rooms, which I think is necessary, so people take action.

The holocaust was glossed over when I was at school and some of the trials were still taking place, people should have been more informed of the ins and outs.

It amazes me how very few meat eaters can cope with watching farming/slaughtering/experiments, but are happy to put judgements on someone who can.
