AIBU?

To ask DP when we're likely to see some of this money back he's supposedly laying out for a mate?

DP is supposedly "fixing a computer for a lad at work" which naturally means we're shelling out the cost. DP assures me that all the money will be made back as he sells the old parts but we're now £70 down and the bank account is £160 away from going into the overdraft.

We're supposed to be keeping our account in top shape ready to reapply for a mortgage in October and on top of that we're supposedly saving for a wedding and honeymoon.

I know £70 doesn't seem a lot but for "a lad at work" it's grating on me.

DP and I are not currently talking as it is but I want to text him and ask him when some of this money will see its way back into the account!

Would that be unreasonable?

No, but if the two of you aren't currently talking and you're reduced to communicating via text, you have much bigger problems than £70.

No it's only because he's at work.

so when you said "we're currently not talking as it is" you didn't mean that you weren't currently speaking, as in fallen out, but we're not currently speaking as it is because he's at work?

In which case, I'd say wait until he gets home and you can have a face to face conversation about it. Text is really inadequate. It's for saying hi and telling someone you're running late, not for having complex conversations about financials. It's so easy to end up in a row over text because it's easy to have crossed wires.

Your husband should be showing you how much these spare parts are selling for. It's not enough to say that he'll sell them. Who will he sell them to? How long does that take? When will he start? How much have similar parts sold for? etc etc. And the big question - how much more is he going to spend on the computer?

so, this mate is getting his computer upgraded for free...not being charged for bits or labour as dh can flog the old bits off?

That sounds a complete nonsense to me.

Yes Shu, that's exactly what I said. Why would anyone do that?

All sounds like bullshit doesn't it but I'm more concerned about the money rather than anything else.

it doesn't sound fair, does it?

There was another poster recently whose husband was fixing up some woman from work that he was a bit too close to's computer.

Beats me why people take advantage. I would never let someone fork out for me. Particularly let them pay for the privilege of doing me a huge favour! That's taking the utter piss.

So, he's buying new parts to fix a computer, not charging the owner for these new parts or for any of his time and he also thinks he'll make all his costs back on selling the old parts off? Am I getting this right??

Yanbu wanting to know when you'll get your money back.
As an aside he is being very U thinking he'll get all his money back.
Are you sure this is as innocent as you think?? Something sounds very odd!!

As an aside, using an overdraft 'properly' (or credit card) isn't bad for four credit report as it proves your ability to use credit sensibly.

Did you post this the other day under a different name?
There's a strikingly similar thread here -
