AIBU?

An AIBU containing parking AND neighbours!

I want to know whether IABU or DH.

We have new neighbours who, shock horror, have three cars. We live in a row of five little cottages, each with room outside for one car (no lines or bays, just our rigid Britishness!)

The new neighbours are parking wiggledy piggledy, taking up three spaces in the row. I fear DH may have some sort of seizure if it continues

Now assuming they pay road tax and council tax, I think they have every right to park where they like, however inconsiderate to their neighbours it may be. DH is apoplectic at this view, citing etiquette, good manners, consideration, general harmonious relations and so on.

So who is BU? (apart from the neighbours!) Me for not having the energy to get worked up over it despite the fact IT IS a massive PITA or DH for being ridiculously nimbyish?

Well, you are both right. They can park wherever they like but the question is whether they should.

YANBU

DH is being nimbyish.

But you know that. Smile

YABNBU
Your husband is right in that they shouldn't be selfish idiots and should consider their neighbours. You are right in that it isn't worth getting into a frenzy over and they are not breaking any law.
Have you considered placing your refuse bin on their front step/right in front of their gate every day for a month?

Wait till another neighbour combusts and sit back and enjoy the fireworks?

YABU
I know on here parking is considered a free for all but not where I live
I wouldn't feel happy parking outside somebody's house on a regular basis
If they have 3 cars they should've bought a house with parking

Just because you have the right to do something, it doesn't mean you should.

I know your pain. A neighbour has two cars, plus allows his son and dil to park in our street (extra four cars, they have two each) so they don't have to pay for permits one street up. We live in a tiny cobbled (private) street, only 6 houses. This is the same man who organised a permit system to stop people who didn't live here from parking. Cheeky bastard.

Ooh no freewee, we are far too refined and polite for that :o We will all have to content ourselves with gnashing our teeth and clutching our pearls in private :o

If you can't get a space outside your house, how far away do you have to park?

Report
HedgehogsDontBite · 28/01/2015 12:31

Your husband is BU. If he wants the certainty of being able to park next to his house then he should buy a house with parking. Otherwise you just have to get on with it.

Totally agree with stillwearingaredribbon, with that many cars they should have bought a house with adequate parking.

I like to think that I am reasonable enough to agree with you and say it isn't worth getting worked up about. However, I completely understand your DH's position. This is the kind of thing that drives me crazy!!! The idea of moving into a street, with 3 cars, and not having any awareness of the existing residents parking needs baffles me.

It would be perfectly reasonable to catch them and say that traditionally you have all just parked one car outside your own house and parked second cars elsewhere. You understand they don't have to do that but it would be lovely and very neighbourly if they would like to follow that tradition. If they are nice people and hadn't thought of it they will be glad to know.

We had something similar in one house we rented and we had basically worked it out for ourselves but appreciated it when someone told us so we knew to be careful and how to not upset our new neighbours. We have moved away but still see them all!

maid A couple of minutes walk really to avoid putting other villagers in the same position I don't have a newborn and associated paraphernalia, most of my groceries are delivered and I have two perfectly functioning legs. I fail to see a huge issue, though I will concede that it is inconsiderate.

I should probably add that I am currently being driven irrationally crazy by a lady who keeps parking outside our house on the street, making it harder for me and the lady opposite (we both have young DC). She parks outside our house even though she lives further down the road, even when the road is completely empty. I want to ask her why but don't want to reveal my craziness!

What other choices do they have? If they're YPLACing then that is annoying but legal.

It might be polite to park thoughtfully, but YANBU and DH is being a NIMBY as pps said.

So is your DH's issue their lack of consideration? I guess everyone has their level at which you consider other people to be rude - perhaps he (and obviously me judging by my rant) have a lower bar?

I'm with your husband I'm afraid (and slightly ashamed) to admit. It would piss me off soooo much. Not much you can do about it unless they haven't realised and a polite word will put them right.

Being pedantic - there's no such thing as Road Tax! And your neighbours can park where they like on a public road. I've had an earful from a neighbour for parking outside her house once when I was perfectly legally entitled to park there (and it was the only space left on the road). It wasn't pleasant. Your husband should keep his opinion on this to himself.

My next door neighbour is the same. We live in a terraced street and if there is a space outside her house big enough to fit 2 parked cars, you can guarantee that she will park slap bang in the middle of the space leaving not quite enough room either side of her for anyone else. Mainly because she's a crap driver inconsiderate and doesn't give a toss about her neighbours.

Across the road in another street , one side (which has houses) is residents parking only. The other side (with no houses) is not. So obviously all the people who live in the houses park on the free side so they don't have to pay for a permit and all the people who can't park due to inconsiderate neighbours have to park streets away because they can't park on the residents only side!!

Totally mad behaviour but ... Your husband could make up a paste which resembles bird poo and flick it all over their cars under cover of darkness. They may decide to park somewhere the 'birds' won't find them! Grin

Icimoi · 28/01/2015 13:06

Your husband is being perfectly reasonable. Just because something is legal doesn't prevent it being thoroughly inconsiderate and very bad manners.

I'm on your DH side. My dad has a drive way outside his house, he doesn't drive but my brother (who still lives at home ) does.
He can't park on the drive way because next door park their 3 cars outside and block it so my brother has to park in the next street.
A builder was once in the street with a van asking if he was in anyone's way and my dad over heard next door saying don't worry about knocking there they don't have a car. Hmm
