Just go to your pharmacy in the first instance, and see what they say. why would you take medical advice from some stranger online

It sounds unlikely TBH.
Have you recently given birth?
On the pill?
smoker?
Overweight?
Had surgery?

Get a tape measure and measure round the widest part of each calf and compare.
Is the sore one bigger?
Is it hot/red/tender?
Do you feel feverish?
Take off your shoes and socks/tights. look at the skin and veins on your foot and ankle. Are they more visible/swollen on the affected side?

Having said all that, it is still not possible to diagnose over the internet, but these are the risk factors/signs/symptoms that are significant.

Damn....maybe, just maybe some one on MN is a Dr or a nurse who works in this field...I haven't had much luck healthwise recently and have been to Dr or A&E quite a lot...eye bleed being the latest...If someone says that if it IS a DVT the pain will NOT go away, then I will know its not a DVT...

Just go to the GP or A&E. You can't afford to mess around and take a risk, not all DVTs cause heat or swelling. It's a very simple blood test to check your likelihood of it being a DVT - get it done.

Thanks thumb...I just feel...bloody hell not another problem...What I was hoping for was someone saying...'if the pain goes away it definitely isn't a DVT'...But I suppose a trip to Dr is due...it is getting worse..

HRT is, in this situation, as much of a risk factor as the OC pill. Has anyone in your family had DVTs?

Report
3littlefrogs · 17/01/2015 11:57

I agree with thumbwitch about the HRT and family history.
But someone actually needs to look at it - we can tell you the most likely warning signs, but the internet isn't a good way to diagnose things.
If you have been immobile for a while that is another risk factor.

If you've been unwell and resting more and on HRT get it seen. I always err on the side of caution as they can present in different ways.

I had DVT and didn't realise- thought I had strained my ankle somehow. The pain was very bad for a couple of days, then diminished... A few days later, I walked up the stairs, was gasping for breath for 10 minutes at the top and by the evening was in A&E with multiple blood clots in both lungs. The cramping feeling sounds very familiar and is what persisted after the initial pain has gone. So I'm not trying to scare you but yes, do get it looked at ASAP please! The only factor for me was being on the pill- no plane flights, not a smoker etc- and I was only 35.

SilverDragonfly1 · 17/01/2015 13:29

PS although my ankle was noticeably swollen (the clot had formed near the bottom of my calf), it wasn't red or hot. When I googled my symptoms, it came up very clearly as Achilles Tenenditis, which is why I didn't bother to go to the doctor and just popped some ibuprofen.

Please call NHS24 for advice. It's probably not but it's not worth the risk!

Silver - were then tested for thrombophilia? You should have been.

MyrnaLoy · 17/01/2015 16:00

Please go and get it checked - mine wasn't red, or swollen but it was a DVT. Please don't go by what an internet forum says.

Report
Thumbwitch · 17/01/2015 16:03

Hilarious. Practically everyone has said "go and get it checked" and then someone comes along and says "don't go by what an internet forum says". Maybe reading responses first might help.

Get it checked, I have had two now, I was very overweight but no other risk factors that we knew of (turns out that I have Protein S Deficiency, which was picked up on the thrombophilia screen after the first DVT).

Slightly different symptoms each time, the second time I got it scanned before it started swelling as I remembered the feeling at the start.

I remember how scared I was about the first one, and didn't want to get it checked out and find out, but I was so glad I did, the injections and warfarin were all the treatment that I needed each time, and was back at work after a week.

I have had the symptoms a third time, but that time while I had a clot, it wasn't in the deep veins.

Myrna's saying 'go and get it checked' too. Thumbwitch.

Pain with my dvt went away when I wasn't standing at first. My first symptoms were also cramps. Leg didn't swell or go red or have any outside sign of the clot, so much so that my GP said I'd torn my Achilles and to rest. 3 weeks later I had a huge pulmonary embolism so please do get it checked ASAP and ask for the test (think it's called d-dymer or similar?). Better safe than sorry.

Thumbwitch · 17/01/2015 16:12

Yes I know, ItsAll - that wasn't the point.

Thumbwitch · 17/01/2015 16:13

D-dimer test, yes.

PS don't want to scare you but couldn't read this without saying please get it checked!
If they catch a dvt early I believe treatment can be quite simple.

ItsAllKickingOffPru · 17/01/2015 16:18

Confused What was the point then, Thumbwitch?

Yes, OP should get it checked.

No, she shouldn't take notice of advice on an internet forum that might persuade her it's nothing.

No need to snark at Myrna afaics.

Report
Thumbwitch · 17/01/2015 16:23

NO ONE tried to persuade her it was nothing, that was the point. Hence my comment about reading other responses.
