AIBU?

to think they should've said pay was into Paypal account only

I have started a new, part-time job and all is going well, except that, when I asked about when I was going to get paid, the company said it goes into your Paypal account. Both DH and I loathe Paypal, after several bad experiences involving it, so no longer had Paypal accounts. I feel they should have made it explicit from the outset that this was how payment was made. I wouldn't have thought to ask as I have never heard of anyone being paid in this way.

That's very odd. Won't PayPal take some of your wage?

How very odd. What type of work is it?
Why did you not check before starting work though? What does your contract say?

Report
cheapskatemum · 18/10/2014 18:56

Thankfully, no, Paypal don't take any of my wages. It's interviewing people. The contract only mentions the amount of pay, not how it is paid. I'm glad others agree it's odd. I thought it might be because I've been out of paid employment for a while and live out in the sticks that I'd never heard of this!

Yes, normally it is something that is discussed and agreed to by both parties.

Let them know you don't have a paypal account and ask for any money to be transferred into your bank account.

Haha, I told them that and they have set one up for me. It wasn't brought up at all at interview stage, which is why I was a bit miffed. There was no way they were going to change their system and I both need and enjoy the work. Obviously I transferred the money into our bank account immediately it went into Paypal, but it is the security of the system I'm wary about. DH's Paypal account was hacked previously, which is why he no longer has one.

That is really weird. I have never heard of anyone being paid via PayPal! Would not have occurred to me to ask them about it as would assume bank account would be used. Weird!

That is the first time I hear about wages being paid into a PayPal account. This looks dodgy as hell, I don't know what the trick is but there must be one, it's just too weird.

Please don't unnerve me more than I am already, MrsP, but at least I'm glad it seems IANBU!

If money is paid into paypal account, they can claim money back.

Report
PigletJohn · 18/10/2014 20:24

they might be technically able to claim it back, but it's very unlikely to be legal.

Are you an employee with a payslip and PAYE, or they pretending you are self-employed?

londonrach · 18/10/2014 20:36

I dont paypal either. Isnt there a limit to much you can get out of a paypal account. Get them to pay you properly. Very strange.

persepolis123 · 18/10/2014 20:56

I would be very wary if you are self employed as they can claim the money back via paypal.

Why do they not just pay you by FPS into your bank?

Report
OraProNobis · 18/10/2014 21:05

Can't you just let them pay it in and the minute they do you just withdraw it to a regular bank account?

Lots of online companies let you pay via paypal now, perhaps it's getting even more popular with employers too. Nice of them to let you know first though.

I get paid via PayPal. I have a basic business account on there as there was too much money going in for an ordinary PayPal account. I love the fact that everything I do is online. It's so easy. I've never had a problem.

the paypal has you bank account number and/ or your credit card details. The money can be taken form your account if Paypal account empty.

PigletJ I love the way you put it, yes, they are pretending I'm self employed. I don't have a problem with that, it's extremely unlikely I'll earn enough to pay tax.

ClapHands I can see how it would work for you and I'm pleased for you. I do hardly anything online though!

OraProNobis that's exactly what I'm doing, but personally, I'd rather just cut out the middleman.

Thanks for all your replies, I'll know to ask in future.

DH's Paypal account was hacked previously

You've set up two-factor authentication, right?

Because it does get tedious when people complain of being "hacked" then there's an almost complete solution available, which they decline to set up because they can't be bothered.

Sounds very dodgy. I wouldn't accept it. Why can't they do BACS?
Something smells off.

They set up your paypal account? Shock

Do they have access to it then?

Who legally owns the paypal account?

Can they withdraw money from your account then and transfer to their own?

I would be very wary of this. There's no reason for this other than to hide it as a payment for goods or services to avoid any possibility of you being their employee.

But if you are self employed why the need to go through this route.

do they send as a gift to avoid fees?

And even if you transfer money out if they claw it back paypal will pursue you for the debt

Is it self employed?

this sounds like some sort of a scam

When you transfer money from PayPal to a bank account PayPal takes a fee, so you're losing out on wages

How did they set you up an account? It can't be linked to an email address you set up and did you give them your bank details? I'd he changing the email address and password on it immediately

I wouldn't be happy at all about wages being paid this way, sounds very dodgy
