To want to retain my train ticket

Asked to be let through the gate at the train station by showing my ticket - I need to retain it to show what the money was spent on - lady at gate asked why I wanted to keep my ticket and told me in future I need to request a receipt when I buy it. I have a receipt, but it doesn't detail the journey so is of no use, I need to keep the tickets.

AIBU to just want to be let through the gate in peace?! I can't be the only person in the world to need to keep my ticket surely?

I usually need to keep my ticket as well, but never had anyone at the manual gate try and take it off me!! Some automatic barriers give you your ticket back anyway, some don't ( I'm looking at you Ipswich!!)

I have to reclaim travel costs sometimes and they always accept the receipt.

Sometimes my ticket is valid to the next station along the line (because I travel from there, and buy a return); if that happens you get your ticket back when you go through.

If they let you keep the ticket you could (theoretically) use it again.

Merry - only originals are accepted sadly.

Surely the gate cancels it so it can't be used again?

That's a bit odd baring in mind that hmrc will accept scans and copies of invoices and receipts.

There are loads of apps now that record this kind of information.

Maybe a nice picture of you and a guard underneath the station sign at the beginning and end of your journey holding the relevant day's paper would be enough?

Perhaps it would make more sense to press for a change in policy at your place of work - why do they need originals/tickets rather than receipts? Could they possibly relax this rule if it is causing trouble for their employees (assuming you aren't the only one).

I'm heading to London soon and need to retain my tickets as evidence for a discount thing - never thought that I would be challenged but I'll be ready!!

I've had to do this to reclaim expenses, if you ask a member of staff they will usually look at a ticket and let you through. Very handy as I like to keep tickets as bookmarks to remind me of train trips ;)

I like to keep tickets to put in my dds scrapbook & i just ask to keep it. I have had a few strange looks but never anyone insisting on taking it from me.

I travel to London weekly and always hang on to my ticket. I keep them for ds who likes to play trains! I always mutter some excuse about expenses. Never had a problem.

So how does your expenses policy work for people who travel on Oyster Cards? Does the company want you to pay the massive penalty for using paper just so they can see it?

Local organisation, not an issue with Oyster cards etc.

If you want to use the 2for1 days out discounts then you have to show your ticket with the voucher so surely people must be allowed to keep their tickets otherwise why would they say you have to show them to get the discount.

Also most stations around the country don't have someone standing there to take your ticket off you. I've only seen it happen in London.

halamadrid they do that in most cities that I have been to, well, most are automated and then have one wider gate for families/disabled/people with buggies/cases.
