Been invited to a colleagues birthday night out tomorrow. Don't know her that well but nice to be asked. Looks like it's going to be food and then possibly a club-type place. Didn't know about the club before I accepted the dinner invite.

Ffs. I am pushing forty and slightly plump these days. I do not want to go to a bloody nightclub. I do not want to spend my Saturday night miles from home with people I hardly know in a fucking nightclub surrounded by teenagers being sick on themselves and being deafened by shite music. I also can't drink as one glass of anything alcoholic makes me really ill.

I've already said I'll go and we've arranged lifts etc. I'm going to have to go aren't I?

Go, drink 'virgin' cocktails and you never know, you might enjoy it. If not, at least you had a go. A lot of these places are full of 'older' women trying to get off with young blokes. Might not be your cup of tea but I guarantee you won't be the only women of your age and you'll likely have far more class than the rest.

go to dinner then make an excuse- the kids/ oh / your 108 year old granny need you, gotta go, sorry!

or just say " I'm up for the meal but not for the dancing, sorry".

Yeah I'm always honest like that and tell them I've gone right off clubbing. No-one's seemed to mind so far.

In fact it's normally met with relief from one or two people who say they don't want to go on to the club either

Just go for the meal and then make your excuses and go home. I used to loathe the 'Friday night drinks' ethic where I used to work, and often went for just one, then rushed off to deal with "plumber", "dentist" or whatever else I was meant to be doing.

My dd is 'pushing 40' she is my youngest! Even I at pushing 70 (very hard) am not 'an old gimmer'! I agree re clubs though-loud and boring.

I just say, "I'm 40, I don't do clubbing anymore". It's fine. I never did want to be the oldest swinger in town.

It's not that, it's just that I've said I'll go out with her to celebrate her birthday and I'll feel like a party pooper if I say I'm not going. It seems mean to duck out.

If there really are going to be people older and fatter than me then I won't feel quite so out of place.

I can't really come home after the meal, I'm getting a lift with someone close by and the taxi home would cost more than the night out.

I gave up clubbing after the time I fell asleep in one. I realised I can't have been having a very exciting time, and what's the point of spending money to get in when I could spend time in the comfort of my own bed back home?

to add last time We went to a club It was raining hard so We went to the front of the queue to demand entry as it was wet and I had no umbrella. the bouncer let us in. we as in 3 midfield aged women with youngsters in a works do.

asked for a cuppa in the bar and got a nice pot.

felt the carpets needed a clean and managed to shout this to the waitress, she agreed with a nice smile at the old ladies drinking tea.

we observed the girls would be cold going home dressed in barely nothing tutted a bit and finally wrapped ourselves in our scarfs and coats and headed out to a taxi.

a wild night.

It wouldn't surprise me if a couple of others didn't want to go clubbing either and you could share a taxi with them?

Either way even if I was really looking forward to going, I'd hate to go anywhere if I couldn't come back when I was ready to leave IYSWIM?

Oh and don't worry about your age or your weight because young certainly doesn't equal slim, necessarily.

Success!

The young things went off to a club and three of us, including my lovely lift, stayed at the restaurant for a cup of tea before heading home.

I had a lovely time.
