AIBU?

to not understand why it is a big issue that Kristen Stewart doesn't smile?

This is a little bit of an extension of a different thread where it was pretty much unanimous that saying "cheer up love" is a twattish and ignorant thing to say.

So why should she have to smile?

Are all women seen as ornamental? She has, unknowingly, raised the challenging notion that smiling is not actually obligatory. The fact she is repeatedly mocked and attacked for this digression proves that there is, still, A Way We Should Be as women. God help us if we don’t like it.

If there is ever a thread started about her on here you can be 100% certain someone will mock her for not smiling. Kristen Stewart’s failure to conform may seem like a tiny and insignificant notion, but it does a significantly good job at pissing people off.

Yanbu.

If I was famous I suspect similar things would be written about me. I do not have a happy face when it's at rest.

I'm sure she's absolutely lovely, smiley and chatty - when she's just walking from her car to the shop and is with friends.

Same thing happens with Victoria Beckham. Walks around not grinning? Well she must be a miserable bitch then! Hmm

Exactly Ali

You wouldn't get the same thing said about Robert Pattinson or David Beckham would you? Or probably any man.

Why didn't you say this on the other thread?

She makes her money in front of cameras, therefore we own her, and any time we point a camera at her she should be happy about it.

The thing that irritates me about her is not that she never smiles it's that she doesn't seem to have any other facial expression at all other then pained! As an actress that's not really a great trait is it?

Trills

That is what some people genuinely think! Those same people probably think it's fine to interrupt people in the public eye when they're having a quiet meal etc.

I know for one if I made a living in a front of a camera, being papped would piss me off. Camera = a living for actors/models, they don't get paid for pap shots.

Yabu, she has an expressionless, boring look at all times.

JapaneseMargaret · 09/12/2013 08:34

But there are zillions of male actors who sport boring, expressionless faces at all times.

That dullard Ryan Gosling. Bruce Willis. Christ, pretty much any male actor who isn't a comedian.

It's OK for them to do it. Why not Kristen?

YANBU.

This gets on my wick too OP. no one owes anyone a big cheesy grin. To be fair, Andy Murray gets this too, just because he doesn't act all sweet and cuddly. Poor Victoria Beckham gets it worse than anyone. Us grumpy gits need to stick together!

Yanbu. I think she is a pretty introverted person despite being an actress and I think she genuinely hates the attention she gets coupled with the fact she just has 'one of those faces'.

well any one daft enough to choose a cold vampire over a hot wolf.

no wonder she's pissed off. daft mare.

Kirsten stewart takes herself far too serious she seems to not like to be in the limelight and hates red carpet nonsense she probbaly thinks she is above it she has a job to do you smile for the camera and move on, while in her private live she can look as miserable as she likes I also have one of those faces, she was in a film about a sparkly vampire and a half naked werewolf it is hardly a classic Wink

Robert Pattison has the personality of a plank they both looked so bored all the time, he is another one who takes his job to seriously

For the most part I agree. However at premieres and other red carpet events she is 'on duty,' and part of her job is to look the part. Glam and smiley. It seems unprofessional to my eyes for her to be standing there with a face like a slapped arse on those occasions. That applies to men on the red carpet too, and as for Brad Pitt turning up with greasy hair and a dirty beard, like a hobo that nicked a tux... Everyone has standards of dress and demeanour at work, these (extraordinarily highly paid people) also have standards they should meet whilst working. In their own time they can be as miserable looking as they like.

I agree i dont really care what actors do on their day off I think especially in the US they have cameras following them all the time if they are the in actor but at an even just smile and look like you want to be there even if they don't

It does suit her the not smiling.

Some people do it well, on the other hand John Hamm smiles too much, he should be grumpier like Don for eg.

mrsjay · 09/12/2013 09:32

well maybe not smiling all the time but she does look as if she would rather be picking her nose than what she is actually doing,if i passed her in the street i wouldnt say cheer up love or anything but she has a look about her as if she is better than everybody around her

BatmanLovesRobins · 09/12/2013 09:33

Aw, if this was in Chat, I'd put a picture! I think she does tend to smile on the red carpet, but there's this whole image that the media portrays of her that means the unsmiling ones get published.

Good for her, I think. Felt a bit sorry for her after the Rupert affair was splashed all over the world's news for days. Who's business was it other than the four people directly affected?

DoJo · 09/12/2013 15:38

Wasn't sure who Jon Hamm was, so did a quick google and one of the auto complete options was 'Jon Hamm Penis'! That may explain why he smiles a lot...Grin

I have a theory that she's actually a fantastic actress and realised that Bella Swan was a really moany, woe-is-me character without much emotional depth and played her totally accurately.

In some of her other films she's capable of the full range of human emotions (it actually makes her look like a different person) so I think this is just her stand against the horr-ocious Twilight films Grin

Report
Callani · 09/12/2013 16:20

Also, I think that like Victoria Beckham the media has decided she's a grumpy cow and they like to run stories of "give us a smile love" just to fill their magazines...
