AIBU?

Am I being unreasonable to want to see if I could do it better?

As long as a decade ago it was shown that girls in Papua New Guinea were hitting puberty as early as 6 or 7. This was due to the fact that their diet is mostly chicken. The birds that they ate were fed hormone filled feed to ensure that they grew faster and bigger than they normally would. These hormones were then ingested by the girls and had much the same effect on them as they had on the chickens. These same hormones are fed to chickens all over the world (please don't jump down my throat for this, I know not every country has hormonally accelerated chickens, but those that do are spread across the globe, hence all over the world). While the effects are not as obvious as in Papua New Guinea, because most people do not have such a chicken intensive diet, the average age for females to hit puberty is dropping.

The white lining inside tin cans contains chemicals which can enter in to the food in the tin, this Bisphenol A, mimics female estrogen and can have serious consequences for both males and females. Parabens which can be found in most hygiene products also have hormonal effects, which can raise the risk of cancers.

Am I being unreasonable to think that GMO is the least of our worries when chemicals and hormones, in not just our food but our cleaning products, shampoo, and the containers we use to store our food have been repeatedly proven to be dangerous and are still not being addressed by our nannies in parliament. Is it unreasonable to think that if you care that much then do the required research and avoid those products which pose a risk, rather than scaremongering with half formed facts and expecting people miles away (who can afford to buy organic anyway, so don't really care) to ban them?

YANBU. DH and I have instigated an almost vegetarian diet as neither of our DDs were really eating meat.

We don't eat food from tins but it's a real concern that many, many families do.

Oh and we have an allotment so soon, we'll know where most of our veg comes from too.

YAWN
And wondering how many other forms you are cut and pasting research free scaremongering to.

YABveryU and boring.

Is this nononsensemumof2 or just coincidence that two people are posting about GMOs...?

YABU to believe everything you have written is true. Every 'fact' you have stated, down to the traditional diet of people in PNG, is incorrect. Do you REALLY believe this stuff or do you just like to provoke a response?

BPA, sadly, is extremely difficult to 100% avoid. It's in most plastics-water bottles, plastic food containers, packaging, toys, even certain baby bottles contain it and yes it is in tins. Think toothpaste tube and that's how difficult it is to eradicate from your lifestyle. You can limit it though and we aim to with wooden toys and avoiding things that come in containers and tins where possible.

You mean like you've just done by posting all that with not one link or piece of evidence to support it? Hmm

Hobnob there's no need to be snotty;....mine DON'T eat chicken or tinned foods. You can snigger all you like but I'd rather take some control over my children's diet. Those who are in charge don't give a shit what the masses get through the food chain. Why let them control you?

My children eat chicken once a week, red meat twice a week and vegetable and lentil dishes the rest of the week. We only eat beans, chick peas and tomatoes out of tins. I think we're safe. Nice try though.

Actually this is a response to Nononsensemums post, a little bit hurt you thought I was her. I was hoping my point was at least understandable. I am not going to post evidence, why? Because the whole point was why are people not researching these things for themselves. My points about hormones, and chemicals were more to demonstrate that these issues are not new and have been around for many years, and are still not being addressed so why expect current issues to be. I did not say their 'traditional' diet was chicken, I said their current diet was, at least at the time that the hormone issue was world wide news.

KentishWine, please (apart from the 'traditional diet' issue, which I hope I have explained) explain what parts of my post were incorrect. As if I am wrong I would like to be corrected so I can avoid being wrong again.

Crapswithbears, my question of why don't people do their own research would be rather pointless if it were accompanied by research.

I had no intention of scaremongering, I want to know why it is seen as the governments job to protect us, and why this is being treated like a new(ish) problem? Especially since Nononsensemums post descended in to arguments over grammar and the validity of research that was found on the internet.

Thank you Neo, Loofet and Hob for being nice. This was my first post (and only to those of you who think I am filling the boards with this stuff) and I expected a harsh response based on the topic, but I had hoped my attackers would have fully read the OP at least.

Instead of keep adding to the list of what we shouldn't eat can someone tell us what we can eat. I have looked in my fridge and all I am left with after all the threads this week is a jar of homemade chutney , a llimp celery stalk and the ice I've scraped out of the little freezer compartment.

There you wanted a link to questionable research, now you have it. Could someone, anyone, please address the actual question.

God dont eat that, its probably been contaminated by chemicals from the freezer.

I am not going to post evidence, why? Because the whole point was why are people not researching these things for themselves.
Then you have no argument to put.
Sorry, but if you instigate a discussion, then you provide evidence. I did also point out that a quick google produced no valid results. So, you are positing a theory currently based on nothing.

You know the stress of worrying will probably kill you quicker than the chemicals anyway!
