To not expect to be ID'd by Sainsburys?

I bought a load of online shopping this afternoon - just food and household stuff (bleach, dishwasher tablets, washing powder).

The delivery man gave me my shopping and then asked me for photographic ID. I kind of went and then said I don't own photographic ID - which was a whole other problem in itself as I could only show him my uni card (which has a tiny photo and details of when I started uni, but no DOB) and my bank card and store card which have no DOBs either - he really wanted to see my DOB and photo together.

Eventually he went having ummed and hmmed about over my poor selection of IDs (I was all set to present him with DWP letters/my birth certificate!). Have got a "young scot" card which proves I'm under 26, but the photo on that was taken in 2004 when I was 13 years old and doesn't look at all like me.

I'm utterly baffled by the whole thing. Why would Sainsburys need an ID? Is it because I bought dishwasher tablets and bleach?

It's just a tad confusing as I've in the past bought both online, as well as alcohol and aerosols and have never had to show any form of ID!

Reason I'm asking is that if this is something "normal" that I've simply not come across before, might look into getting proper ID so it doesn't have to happen again..

Never happened to me - if it did and I didn't have any I'd wave him off cheerily as obviously he'd leave the shopping, what they going to do - refuse to deliver and be paid for the shopping?

I think they can only release the delivery to someone who is over 18? So if they base id'ing people on the basis of think21/25 then they will id anyone who they think is under these ages.

You make bombs with dishwasher tablets and bleach (and a few other handy household chemicals) I think bleach might be subject to poison controls too but not sure on that.

He may have suspected you were very young. take it as a compliment.

TBH there isn't much they can do if you don't but they encourage drivers to ask.

Because you can do bad shit with chemicals and the person that accepts delivery is also accepting responsibility for the stuff. If stuff is missing then the supermarket handed it to a minor.

Different if a minor is in the a shop than the shop dropping it off.

business won't generally argue if the person accepting the delivery was a minor. And replacing missing stuff costs alot. It happens more than you think.

It would be a good thing if he thinks I'm young (I'm 21 so fairly young) - a man turned round to me today when I mentioned my age, and said: "No offence but I thought you were at least 30. You have that look. Not that you look old or terrible though.." !

Another example would be that British gas tell their engineers to not go in a property if they think there is no one over 18 in the property.

Even if its just to service the boiler and no works needs authorising. They should not go in the property at all. However ots obviously a judgment call. One engineer may think the person looks well over 18. Another may not.

never happened to me but DS 2 (16) has taken in shopping when I was in the shower and he was not asked either, AND there was alcohol in that order so maybe he fancied you and wanted to see your age?

Why don't you have any id? Passport or anything? I wouldn't mind being asked but then I do when I buy alcohol (makes me feel good about myself sometimes)

You have to "look over 25" to buy most of that stuff. When you buy online you must make sure someone over 18, but "looks over 25" person is available to take in the delivery.

I'm guessing the driver was dubious of you "looking over 25" and wanted to check you were old enough to be in reciept of such items.
Pita i know, but he was doing his job to make sure the products are not left with a minor.

Sorry I guess that's true. Fwiw I probably don't mind because I know I have ID can you apply for any picture id with DOB which isn't a drivers licence? I can't think of one

A few months ago the Sainsburys delivery guy for us told me they've tightened up on checking people's age because teenagers left at home ordered alcohol whilst they're parents were on holiday without the parents' knowledge. If that makes sense.
Never seems to have a problem realising I'm (well) over 18

I work in a university town and am always having to wait in queues behind students who look under 25 having to prove they're over 18.

I'm always a little disappointed when the assistant over-rides the self-service checkout automatically when I buy alcohol without giving me a second look!

How odd- perhaps because the bleach is dangerous?!
I once got ID'd buying a PG film for DS- I thought she was kidding. When I said I didn't have any, she called over her supervisor who proceeded to tell me that she'd 'let me off this time'.... I was pretty annoyed!
