My friend and I buy Christmas presents for each other's children. Recently she said to me

'X's present doesn't look like I paid much for it but I did'

I don't care how much people spend. Why is the cost of some things so important to people??

It sounds like the cost isn't actually that important to your friend, but that's he is worried it might be important to you.

YABabitU. She doesn't want you feeling that she's been tight when buying for your child, she wants you to think well of something. Phrased a bit badly maybe but sounds like her heart is in the right place.

She probably panicked and thought you might think badly of her. I've lost count of the amount of people who've said to me recently that they've kept the receipt so I can return it if I don't like it. I appreciate the sentiment but what happened to the days when we just bought someone something we thought they'd like for an amount we could afford and just gave it to them without saying anything? If I was worried the present I bought looked cheap I might worry and blurt something like that out.

I almost have to my DSis once. I kind of babbled something about it being a simple gift but she knows what I am like and was understanding of what my concern was.

Maybe she ordered it online and was disappointed that she felt it looked cheap and didn't want you to think she was giving your son a rubbish present ?

I wouldn't have said that myself - a friend always said "I'm sorry if it doesn't look much" but I always loved her presents and wouldn't think anything of the financial side - it was just her worrying (needlessly). Is money tighter for your friend?

I always think presents look cheap when Im buying for people. So I can see why she said it.

Its hard to find a present that looks like the amount it cost!

Well, I can honestly say that I never open a present and think that it looks cheap! It really is the thought that counts isn't it?
