I was on the way back from the park when I saw three men outside the park gates having what I thought to be a fight.

As we got closer, it became apparent that they were not three men at all, they were two men and a boy of about 14. The boy almost definitely had autism.

These two grown men were hitting this boy, who was clearly becoming very distressed and was lashing out at them. They hit him again an shouted at him; at this point, I started to walk over. They PUSHED him across the road and walked off down the road still hitting the boy. At one point, one of the men got his face right in the boy's face and gestured as if to say 'come on then', whilst the other one hit him over the head with a rolled up newspaper. The boy just walked along with them.

Had I not had DD and the baby with me, I would have followed them, but they were walking fast and I couldn't catch them. So I called the police.

WIBU?

Cowardly fuckers. I hope the police caught up with them and didn't let them away with it. What worries me is I think they may have been his carers Sad

Course you weren't being unreasonable, did you expect us all to say you were?

How did you know he was autistic? Or did you already know the boy?

Awful

Carers? Actually that wouldn't surprise me,I hope not. [Sad]

Ah, sorry, needed to rant and be told I hadn't overreacted. Thanks.

Police said they would treat it as an emergency and send a car; they asked for descriptions and location, and took my details. I have no idea if they caught them or not- I worry that they will be fobbed off if they are his carers.

Olympia, I have worked with young people with autism for a number of years, and the boy was moving in a way which was consistent with autism (self-stimulatory behaviour, moving hands in front of eyes etc.). He was non-verbal, and was shouting. He was lashing out at them, and going for their hair- a behaviour also consistent with autism. Of course, I can't be absolutely certain, but that was certainly how it looked.
