Is anyone else watching this. It seems a lot of employers are very reluctant to employ anyone with mental health problems.
But with the cut in benefits coupled with this attitude from employers how are people meant to be able to afford living costs.
And then you get people including SOME employers moaning about people on benefits. Errr.......well if you wont employ them.......

Am out but wanted to watch this.
Sounds like I need to step up my efforts and do more to join in with initiatives/campaigns such as mind/rethink's time to change campaign

It is interesting. I have Bipolar Disorder and constantly worry that I'll never be able to get another job. I think if a potential employer knew they wouldn't employ me, even though I have a great absence record and am very stable.

it makes me so angry that people are so small minded towards mental illness!!!! I'm watching this too and the comment about having serious concerns about hiring someone with mental health issues has made my blood boil!!!!!

Interesting programme bringing prejudice regards mental health to the fore.

Last year on Question Time the boss of Next was moaning about people claiming sickness benefits.
So i would love to know what his policies are on employing people with mental health problems or physical disabilities.

I've had some serious time out of work due to mh in my early 20s and more recently after a trauma and it has made it near impossible to get a conventional job. When I asked the social to help write a CV I was told to lie to cover the gaps in employment. Im absolutely fine now and I have had to become very resourceful as I just never broke into the world of jobs. I've done all sorts if work though, its made my life a lot more interesting and varied. I'm self employed now. I would never consider applying for a "proper" job as I've applied for millions in the past andnenever got an interview.

I think certain mental health issues actually make people BETTER employees in some circumstances. Traits that go with some issues make them better suited to certain tasks.

I thought it was quite an inspiring programme and all of the emplyers admitted that they had been wrong to write off people with mental health problems. Well done to the people who took part, it took real courage.

I have suffered from depression for the last three years however I have had no serious issues for the last two years. I work in a very public, stressful environment and luckily my employers were incredibly helpful and I was able to get private counselling sessions. If I was thinking about changing jobs I would be very reluctant to disclose my mh issues. I don't believe it affects me much anymore, I do have the odd low day but it does not affect my working life. I had about six weeks off work and nothing since that time two years ago. Unfortunately I believe that new employers do see mh issues as a reason for not employing capable people. It's not right, much as sexism and racism still exists in the workplace.
