to think not folding a buggy to make way for a wheelchair user on a bus is despicable?

Just watching Channel 4 news here and a focus piece on public transport accessibility for disabled people.

Apparently one of the biggest users for wheelchair users is parents with buggies not folding them to make way for wheelchair users. This startled me - surely there are not really parents out there who refuse to fold down their buggies to make way for a person in a wheelchair??? Seriously? What kind of twat does that?

AIBU to think that any parent who does this is not a nice human being?

Does this actually happen???

Not this again?

somedayillbesaturdaynite · 20/06/2012 19:58

Angry people who refuse disgust me

StuntGirl · 20/06/2012 20:00

Are we seriously talking about this again? Christ.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 20/06/2012 20:00

There's 2 whole threads full of people who think having DCs in pushchairs means a wheelchair user should not be able to get on a bus.

SauvignonBlanche · 20/06/2012 20:01

I'm hoping this is supposed to be ironic but don't remember OP from this or this
Apologies OP if you are for real.

Oppsididitagain · 20/06/2012 20:01

oh jesus christ not this again. how many times do we have to do this thread over

inhibernation · 20/06/2012 20:02

My daughter is 3 (next month) and I have to use a push chair for her on a bus because she is disabled and would not be able to balance whilst I folded a pushchair or sit on a seat without the risk of her falling off. I think if bus drivers were able to wait and not drive off immediately I could manage it.

nailak · 20/06/2012 20:02

actually i think on the other threads people were saying that others should help a mum with dts and a todddler to fold.

newmum001 · 20/06/2012 20:02

Wasn't this done last week?

TantrumsAndBalloons · 20/06/2012 20:04

No there were people justifying why people with pushchairs should not have to move.
Pushchairs, people standing, all take priority over a wheelchair user.

Tbh I understand why people are upset but 4 threads??

Zara1984 · 20/06/2012 20:08

OP here - sorry I am for real Blush I honestly had never heard of this issue before. Will check out the other threads. I should signal some kind of kill-this-thread klaxon, perhaps....

Here's a couple more just from today. Sad

elizaregina · 20/06/2012 20:20

There shouldnt be a choice needed to make, most people using buses are the elderly, disabled, parents.

start lobbying for user friendly buses.

i think foreign visitors are going to get a huge shock trying to use our transport system over hte olypics - i find it embarrasing.

Alameda · 20/06/2012 20:23

oh I didn't know this was a recent popular topic either

it shouldn't be a competition, buses should have adequate space, folding seats, to accommodate everyone but of course if you can move/fold the pushchair easily you would (wouldn't you?)

LaurieFairyCake · 20/06/2012 20:24
  1. There should be more spaces
  1. There should be more buses
  1. Sometimes it's not possible WITHOUT ASSISTANCE to hold twins and fold a buggy
  1. People with idiotic large buggies should fold them or take smaller ones on public transport
  1. All members of the public should aim to help people with disabilities as much as possible - and that includes helping some poor woman with twins or extra children to hold them so she can get her pushchair out her way of the wheelchair user.
Ambi · 20/06/2012 20:25

This is why I drive a car, bloody bus politics!!!

D0oinMeCleanin · 20/06/2012 20:25

There isn't a choice to make. It is a space specifically for wheelchairs. Buggies may occupy the sapce when it is not needed for wheelchairs.

If someone in a wheelchair wants to get on the buggy must vacate the space.

See? Not a choice.

I don't use buses. People with pushchairs should be very glad of this because I'd remove the sodding buggy myself.

If a person in a wheelchair wants to get on the bus and you have a buggy in their space you either fold your buggy or you get off, wish the person waiting to get on a good day and thank your lucky stars that you are able to get off and walk to the next stop/home.

Until people realise that disabilism is real, until they realise they are capable and sometimes even guilty of it. Until the end of time, it would seem.

thekidsrule · 20/06/2012 20:27

oh good another thread on this , NOT please for the love of god ask for it to be deleted, theres plenty of threads to air our thoughts

YANBU if you are genuine and didnt know about the other threads

YABVVVU if you did and stared this to cause more aggro

landofsoapandglory · 20/06/2012 20:29

For the purpose of the debate, YANBU OP. It is a wheelchair space, so should someone in a wheelchair need that space then the person with a pushchair should either fold,or vacate the bus.

Gwlondon · 20/06/2012 20:30

DogInAPramOnTheBus this is a thread about what happened to me a couple of months ago.

KateSpade · 20/06/2012 20:31

On the buses i get on, wheelchairs are never a problem as two prams can fit on one side of the bus, with a wheelchair on the other side, in the wheelchair space.

& I have never got on a bus with three prams on at one time, which i don't think is allowed.

That doesn't really make sense, but what i mean is wheelchair space is not usually a problem near my area its too many prams.

I find it annoying when people with foldable prams don't fold up their prams for people with non folding prams, with toddlers who aren't using the pram at the time and still sit in the designated space.

PurplePidjin · 20/06/2012 20:31

I assume one of Matthew Wright's researchers has moved to the C4 News then Hmm

cakeismysaviour · 20/06/2012 20:32

Oh yes, there are many people who refuse to do this. Quite a few on Mumsnet.

Self-consumed, selfish idiots. Angry

Oppsididitagain · 20/06/2012 20:33

sparkle, might i ask why you havent picked up anybody else who made a simmerler comment to me?

or are you infering in some way that i might not know that disabilism is real?
