....and from the age of 50.

Other public sectar workers get nothing remotely resembling that.

Why?

I read that as penises ........ goes to find glasses and coffee

AKissIsNotAContract · 25/03/2012 10:03

YANBU.

DPrince · 25/03/2012 10:05

Yabu. The full police pension only comes from serving 30 years and only after they put 16% of their wage every month for said 30 years in. Do other public sector workers pay that and be expected to risk their lives. The fire service don't put 16% in.

richpersoninapoorpersonsbody · 25/03/2012 10:05

Yabu my Dh works very hard in sometimes dangerous situations and he pays a massive portion of his wage into his pension which he is now being told will be nothing like he signed up for. He is also not stopping at 50 he has to work for longer then that to get it.

scurryfunge · 25/03/2012 10:05

Do other public sector workers pay 11% into their schemes?

MyDogShitsShoes · 25/03/2012 10:06

Other public sector workers don't get punched in the face on a regular basis.

NoobytheWaspSlayer · 25/03/2012 10:07

YABU

My brother is a Policeman, and he won't get his pension at 50. He has also been stabbed, spit on, had shit thrown at him and been attacked multiple times. It is his job to deal with other peoples problems, and I have great respect for the way he approaches it - I couldn't be as calm as he is. I also couldn't deal with death in all its forms the way he has to. I certainly don't begrudge him his pension, that he contributes a major part of his salary too.

GrahamTribe · 25/03/2012 10:07

YABsoU. The Police also get spat upon, punched, kicked, shot, driven at, derided, abused, stabbed. Do you fancy any of that? Or would you rather envy their pensions from the safety of your ivory tower?

My first husband was a Police officer. His colleagues consider their pensions one of the small compensations for the risks they take to protect the public. My late DH wasn't so lucky. He was killed doing the job that he loved but which is imho often a very thankless task.

GrahamTribe · 25/03/2012 10:08

X posted with Nooby, I'm glad that someone else has pointed out the less pleasant aspects of the job too.

DPrince · 25/03/2012 10:09

My dad paid 16% I am sure. Even so 11% is a massive amount.

MyDogShitsShoes · 25/03/2012 10:10

Graham I'm so sorry for your loss.

callmemrs · 25/03/2012 10:10

Traditionally one of the 'perks' of public sector work is the pension. You know that you'll never earn shed loads, but a good pension is one of the trade offs. Also, police officers work for 30 years , not 40 like many other public sector jobs, to gain the full pension. This I assume is mainly because of the nature of the job. (Of course, the govt is now moving the goal posts which is very unfair. ))

Op- what exactly is your gripe? You could have joined the police force and done 30 years service if it appealed to you. Personally I couldn't hack it

Ime most people who gripe about pensions are those who haven't got one, so aren't paying in hundreds of pounds of their earnings per month, and are envious of those who do.

PrimaBallerina · 25/03/2012 10:13

YABU for listening to Tory and Daily Mail spin.

It's a lot of hard, risky work and a lot of contributions paid by the officers before the pension is paid.

TakenYears · 25/03/2012 10:16

Graham - I am sorry for your loss too. This thread wasn't meant to minimise the good work the police do.

OP posts:
scurryfunge · 25/03/2012 10:17

So what was the purpose then?

DPrince · 25/03/2012 10:24

What was the point? That your pissed people get something (they pay for) you don't?

GrahamTribe · 25/03/2012 10:25

Thank you for your kindness, MyDog and TakenYears. TakenYears, taking issue with their pensions does minimise the good work which the Police do. Seriously, TakenYears, could you do a cop's job? I couldn't, no way, no how could I.

georgie22 · 25/03/2012 10:27

As a fellow public sector worker I always thought it was unfair that police officers recieved a full pension after 30 years service; that was until I discovered that their contributions are increased in order for that to happen. I repsect all public sector workers - most frontline jobs are not easy and have their fair share of risk but as a nurse working in the community the risks I face on a daily basis can not be regarded as the same as those faced by the police. Let's face it we're all being shafted with regard to our pension. OP YAdefinitelyBU and Graham sorry to hear about your first husband.

georgie22 · 25/03/2012 10:28

respect

MyDogShitsShoes · 25/03/2012 10:33

I'm sure the op is completely unaware of the fact that the Police Pay and Pension scheme is currently under review.

I'm sure it's just a coincidence that she is posting this just as they're about to get shafted again.

Pure chance Hmm

TakenYears · 25/03/2012 10:39

I'm a nurse, and yes I wouldn't want to be a cop, but I think we do a good job too, and I think the system is still unfair. My contributions are quite generous, but I will only come out with 6% of my earnings - not 75-50% like the police do, and in a addition they get a large lump sum and can leave at 50. Many nurses work till they're 65 these days.

My dh works for CSI scientific support. The best paid CSI's are on around £30,000 a year, which, after the amount of training and hours of work they put in is really not a lot - he is on a hell of a lot less than that and works in some very dodgy places seeing very distressing things. He will get a very measly pension as has 'only' been there 10 years. He's in his fifties already and will no way be able to retire any time soon. It really is only those who have worked their way up over years abd years who will get a 'good' pension. So you are really being a little misinformed.

TakenYears · 25/03/2012 10:42

MyDog - I am not up to date with the Police Pay and Pension scheme - can you say more about it?
