AIBU?

To think it will all settle down and I don't need a dentist??

For the past couple of weeks one of my wisdom teeth has been moving about and causing me absolute agony. Some days its ok and others I'm dosing myself with ibuprofen (which helps). Mornings are worst - at the minute I could cry.

I HATE dentists, absolutley hate them. So have been assuming that it will stop moving eventually and everything will be OK - please tell me I am not unreasonable?

Do you mean moving as in it's just coming through, or moving like wiggling?

a bit of both I think - wobbly and moving so that other teeth are being shifted slightly and hurt to hell. I'm 37 and until now thought I has escaped wisomd tooth trouble as they all seemed to come through fine.

I would see the dentist. If it is that painful it could be impacted, or there could be an abcess.

I hate dentists too, so I totally sympathise, but it is best to get it checked out if you are having to take painkillers for it.

bugger. It's not impacted - soming straight down. If it was an abcess wouldn't it be sore all the time?

Name of God almighty, is there any subject on earth on which some lunatic will not think this is the place to come for advice?

none Andrew none. Though I do object to being called "some lunatic" Grin

All right, OP, not some lunatic - someone who has exaggerated ideas of the collective powers of MN, great though those powers are - will that do?

Now get thee to a dentist!

There could be an abcess developing, that only hurts if the tooth is putting pressure on it. Even if there isnt, if the tooth is loose and food can get into the socket area, that can create an infection too... definately one of those things that is better to get treated sooner rather than later.

"someone who has exaggerated ideas of the collective powers of MN, great though those powers are" - and what ideas exactly do I have about the collective powers of MN? I'm not expecting MN to collectively hold hands and will my tooth better, I'm not expecting a diagnosis. All I'm doing is procrastinating a bit before I finally go to the dentist??? Anyway - will phone today [scared] emoticon

Naproxen works well, I can't take codeine as it makes me sick. I was given naproxen by an out of hours GP when I had a cracked root and was crying in pain.

It did nicely for 3 days till I could have it taken out, by which time it was so inflamed that the anaesthetic didn't work and the entire waiting room probably cleared off when they heard me screaming. All good fun Grin

You will be FINE
Let us know how it goes x

You see it's not sore at all now- so I lull myself into false security that it's fine..

I used to be a dental nurse. With wisdom teeth it all depends on wether they are impacted. Impacted means are they pushing against another tooth whilst trying to break thro the gum - if they are you will geel a LOT of pressure & the only way to relieve this is to have them removed.
If your dental hygiene is otherwise good then you are unlikely to have an abcess.
If you really hate the dentist & you don't think your teeth are impacted then dose your self up & try to live thro it.
Personally I would try & find a dentist that makes you feel chilled & let them take a look.
Good luck.

If it needs to come out, ask about having a GA instead of LA. Myself, I don't know anyone who had wisdom teeth out with just local - urgh! I have panic attacks over the dentist so I know how you feel.

Orajel is good for pain relief.
I had an abcess under a wisdom tooth, it got so bad my tooth exploded one night in my sleep, funnily enough the pain went but I had to go to the emergency dentist on Xmas eve and have the roots cut out of my gum Sad I subsequently ended up with a dry socket, I've never experienced pain like it and had it packed with foul taasting wadding for a fortnight + mega anitbiotics. I go every six months now. Wink

Go to the dentist.

My DD, 21, has a similar dentst phobia, hadn't been for 3 years and ended up getting a temporary filling last week, bar a lot of tartar build up ( which has turned grey and I've been nagging her about because it looks horrible) her teeth are fine.

Taking ibuprofen/nurofen for longer than a couple of days is a very bad idea for dental pain, as it can cause problems with your stomach lining and lead to ulceration. You need to see a dentist if you are in so much pain. Honestly, getting it sorted will make you weep with relief!

I understand that you are afraid of going to the dentist - a lot of people are. However I reckon your pain is just going to get worse so you do need to go. Have a serious think for a minute though - the only bad bit of the dentist is the injection to numb the area and then .......that's it!! You don't feel anything else!! Then you just have to try (!) and relax and wait for it all to be over. Given that you are posting here, I am guessing you hv had at least one child and therefore have in all likelihood have experienced worse in childbirth. Come on- screw your courage to the sticking place. You will be so pleased and relieved once it is all done. Good luck!
