why do people hog the middle lane or even worse the third lane on a four lane carriageway? If you're scared to change lanes, stay in the slow lane? Sorry but it does wind me up, especially on a long drive. One of the fee small annoyances that get to me :(

Few not fee...

So what? You think every single car on the motorway should stick to one lane and leave the other 3 empty? Yep - sounds like an ace idea to me! Or you could find something else to get wound up about?

FunnysInTheGarden · 29/10/2011 22:43

YANBU, but also prob suffer from road rage. Chill. Besides which you car maybe too fast. HTH

FunnysInTheGarden · 29/10/2011 22:45

well really should have said may be

I bet you go up behind people and flash you lights in an 'I'm very important' kind of way, non?

MangoMonster · 29/10/2011 22:45

menopause that's the way it was designed? You stay to left unless overtaking? It's like that for a very good reason.

Agree with you, Mango, I drive a lot and have seen a surge of people undertaking because a lane hogger in the middle or the overtaking lane refuses to move in. Autobahns in Germany are fantastic, the drivers there wouldn't tolerate the British way of driving.

MillyR · 29/10/2011 22:47

I can't drive myself, but still think YANBU. It is obviously dangerous.

picnicbasketcase · 29/10/2011 22:47

Hmmm. Well, everyone knows that you're meant to stay in the left lane and the others are for overtaking, but realistically, no-one sticks to that. So YANBU for finding it annoying but YABU for expecting anyway to change, I'm afraid.

MilyP · 29/10/2011 22:47

YANBU. It is always the middle lane. Equally annoying are the people who drive right up your arse and flash you to move when you are overtaking - where exactly are they expecting you to go??

To be fair though other peoples driving is always going to annoy you. So not worth getting upset about

MangoMonster · 29/10/2011 22:47

funny I don't flash my lights... Waste of battery power! :)

FunnysInTheGarden · 29/10/2011 22:47

folk shouldn't undertake, but unless you are going slower than 70 you shouldn't overtake either

YANBU.

Drive whatever speed you are comfortable with (within the law, natch) on the leftest lane feasible.
If you are not comfortable changing lanes, you should not be driving on the motorway - or possibly at all.

Hogging middle lane - pet hate of mine

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 29/10/2011 22:48

And supposing the left hand lane is littered with slip roads? You'd be forever changing lanes to move out of the way. Which goes against all the signs saying avoid changing lanes...

TickettyBoo · 29/10/2011 22:48

YANBU at all! This drove me nuts (excuse the pun) when I did a lot of motorway driving in an old job - why can't stupid people realise that these lanes are for overtaking!!!

Sidge · 29/10/2011 22:49

I agree.

Inappropriate lane useage is dangerous and also tends to indicate that the driver has very little awareness of what's actually going on around them, which is quite worrying when driving at those speeds.

MenopausalHaze the inside lane is actually the main driving lane on a motorway and the other lanes are all overtaking lanes. So depending on the flow of traffic then yes you should be in the inside lane and leaving the other lanes free.

hellhasnofury · 29/10/2011 22:49

You checks your mirror, you indicate, you move out, overtake then mirror and move back in again, simple really.

PacificDogwood · 29/10/2011 22:51

Lying, the law is the same in Germany, though. Right lanes are for overtaking, not for sitting in.
And the speeds are crazy in unrestricted bits of Autobahn.
And there is no undertaking allowed either.

Freeways in the States - lowish speed limits, but my goodness the undertaking Shock!!

FunnysInTheGarden · 29/10/2011 22:51

anyway you all drive too fast in the UK. The speed limit is 40 in Jersey, much more civilised what with all the cows and all.

MangoMonster · 29/10/2011 22:52

sidge I couldn't have said it better!

OP posts:
MangoMonster · 29/10/2011 22:57

If you can't change lanes confidently and competently, you shouldn't be on a motorway. It's the highway code. Going 60 in the right hand lane is not acceptable, when the other two lanes are empty. Undertaking is illegal, so what is someone supposed to do?

OP posts:
LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/10/2011 23:00

Pacific... Left lanes are for overtaking, you stay on the right unless you want to overtake and then you pull straight back in, never driving on the overtaking lane.

Speeds might be high but I think the drivers really concentrate, driving is more of an art form. I'm convinced that it's not speed that kills, it's inattention to what you're doing.

I was on the M62 last week, trying hard to avoid a guy who was swaying between the middle and third lane... texting.

becuse if 3 lanes
lane 1......slow and Turning off at next exit or there will be sliproad so people joining slowly
lane 2 ok
lane 3 very fast

PacificDogwood · 29/10/2011 23:05

Lying, yes, I agree with you, but that is what we should all be doing in the UK too according to the Highway Code.

Speeds itself does not kill, 'tis the impact Grin. And if you are faster, the deccelerating will be swifter...
Also, I think speed differential can be a problem.

But yes, inattention/stoopid behavious ie texting/inexperience/unpredictable manouevers are all scary.
