Happy egg chickens are not so happy :( never believe the adverts or anything a company says apparently

Yes it is depressing. Old news now and it has been dealt with. But it is not impressive. I would never use a company that so blatantly lies in their advertising. I have my own chickens who are indeed happy hens - no excuse for overcrowding (profit). Apparently there were some issues with the electric fence.

Yes, very bad form.

Thank you for that link, I won't be buying Happy eggs again.

ah i knew it was a bit old news, only really found out last night though. you're welcome kingprawn..

if i had a garden i would get my own chickens, for now we're going to a farm shop where you actually see all the chickens and the conditions they are in to get our eggs (much tastier too) as dont know if i trust supermarket eggs any more

Its difficult in the City. My local shops sell a variety of free range eggs at different prices. I never know which really is the best for the chickens. I have never understood this much tastier argument though. I have had eggs that are from truly free range eggs - FIL's chickens - laid about 10 minutes before. Everyone says they are much tastier, but I have never been able to taste a difference.

its mainly a difference in the yolk, whenever ive bought eggs from a farm, the yolk has had a stronger colour and tasted a lot... ummm eggier :o

Grin @ eggier

I don't drive so can't get out to farms to see the chickens so have to rely on supermarkets/shops. We don't eat a lot of eggs in this house though so don't buy them that often.

thats it though, i always spend a bit on eggs if i think they're free range. how do companies get away with labelling them as such when they are so obviously not. i dont drive either and it was easy just picking up the happy eggs with my weekly shop. now if i want eggs im going to have to consider driving for an hour to get them. note, i think i sound kind of snobby with this, i dont usually make a fuss about food, meat and veg come from supermarkets like everything else, but that video was horrible, and made me think really strongly about the poor birds

ds1's friends mother keeps hens and ducks and always send him home with a heap that he's collected himself.

There is a difference in taste imo, far less bland and quite rich tasting too.

I have to resist the urge to arrange play dates just to get some eggs Grin

ooh i would totally take advantage of that summerrain..... (tries to find a new friend that keeps hens)

i wont watch the video but i can imagine what is on it. we eat very few eggs but i try and buy free range if i can. i am terrified of chickens but my plan is to have some when i get a house with a garden (hopefully soon).

Booyhoo - once you have had a cuddle with a hen you will fall in love. They are all fluffy and clucky.

Report
BooyHoo · 24/05/2011 10:17

it's the fluff that scares me. once they get to flapping, i'm outta there! Grin

Thanks for the link. I agree with Quoththeraven - how do we know when supermarkets can be trusted?

Report
QuoththeRaven · 24/05/2011 10:26

tbh i dont blame the supermarkets entirely. they should probably check on their suppliers, but its the egg companies themselves that are guilty of false advertisement. i mean electric wire over the hens heads... wtf. that sure as hell isn't free range.

Yuk!

I get eggs from our local farm. they are much fresher than the supermarket ones.

an egg isnt a good egg if you dont see hen poop/feathers stuck to it :o

Poopy eggs - mine are rarely poopy - but that's because I clean 'em out every day. If I don't they stare in mournfully as if to say: 'You expect me to park my derriere in shit? Well excuse me!'

I started buying organic eggs about a year ago after watching a TV programme about battery hens. Whilst they are somewhat pricier, they are definitely worth the extra pennies. I will never again buy barn eggs or even those sold as 'free range'

Thanks for this OP - I've bought Happy Eggs now for several years (DH refuses to have any eggs/meat that isn't at least free range, but ideally organic. He's got big issues with animal welfare) so I bought these because we thought they genuinely came from healthy, well looked after hens. I will not buy them again (I think I'll keep that vid away from DH though, MIL rescued some battery hens when DH was in his 20s, he said it was so upsetting to see the state they were in).

Grin at Punkatheart 's perfectionist hens!

Edwardc - I am liking your DH. Not intimately of course - but his principles. Sounds like he comes from a nice family.

Once you have owned chickens - it is astonishing how sensitive and empathetic they are. They have even done studies and confirmed empathy. Funny girls. They deserve a good life - I wouldn't want to push one of those out of my bottom every day!

ive commented on your thread motherchuffer. has really made me think about the history of my food, those poor poor animals.

Me too edwardcullens, i thought i was helping, giving money to a good organisation. Just want the animals to have a good life before they are killed. What got me in your video motherchuffer, was the almost enjoyment that the staff took in killing the animals (the turkey for example)
