I have just got back from doing my weekly food shop with DS. And am fuming!

I was unloading my shopping at the check-out and another customer came up behind me. This old man decided that it was his place to tell me that the strawberries that I was buying were the 'wrong ones' and that i should 'go back and change them for the local ones'. I was really taken aback and began to explain that i was buying these as they were that bit cheaper etc. He kept arguing with me that I should be paying more and buying the others etc.

I totally agree that it is better to buy local produce when you can. However as money is a little short at the moment I am trying to spend less. And surely this is totally my choice and no one else has the right to tell me what i should/shouldn't be buying?!

Is it not MY choice what I spend MY money on???

Yes it is your choice.

But as it happens he is right Wink

I know he is right, local produce is loads better. I said that in OP. But sometimes spending that extra few pounds adds up.

Surely he isn't right to be telling me at the supermarket check-out??

What orm says and I'm sure someone will be along soon to tell you that if money is tight then there are a lot cheaper fruits to buy than strawberries Wink

yes i am sure there is. But DS loves them and they were his 'little treat' instead of biscuits.

Sorry, really p*ed off

Well, ignore him them - no one forced you to stand there arguing with him Confused

When random strangers start whining on to me about something I don't want to hear I walk away - you don't have to justify your actions.

out of season strawberries, no thanks , don't care how cheap they are...no thanks.

Local ones might not be better tasting either- although undoubtedly come with fewer food miles.

What Orm and Connor said.

But yeah, he shouldn't have stuck his beak in.

Do you have a PYO nearby? We are all waiting with bated breath for ours to open. Nothing beats sun-warmed ripe strawbs. Still not cheap but cheaper than the supermarket usually.

He was probably a bit senile - there is no good reason why anyone would march up to perfect strangers and accost them about their shopping choices so it seems to be the only reasonable explanation.

Why did you enter into it? That's the bit I don't understand.

how annoying!

even more annoying that people rock up and tell you hes right, when you already agreed in the op he right but money is tight

you well within your right to tell him to fuckoff but out

Didn't really mean to. He kind of threw me. He was stood behind me in the queue whilst I was waiting to begin packing. At first he got my attention because he was talking to DS. And then began his little tirade. When he first said it it took me a while to register (live in foreign speaking country) but when i twigged I just replied jokingly that 'these are just a bit cheaper'. And that was it then, he was off on one at me.

British strawberries are far better than foreign ones - mainly Spanish. For some reason they are usually both sweeter and more fragrant - just try puffing the carton, and sniffing.

I felt like telling him that if he was so bothered then he could pay for the local ones!

LPO - dare I ask which country you are in? Some people do feel entitled to offer an opinion even when not asked. I have observed this as a national charcteristic!
