Allergies and intolerances

Possible mild tomato allergy????

I have noticed a couple of times (not every time though) that when dd eats tomato based foods that she gets a rash wherever the tomato has come into contact with her skin. She's not the tidiest of eaters so she ends up with sore bits all round her mouth and even on her face and neck at times if she's really gone for it! It doesn't seem to be affecting her in that she doesn't complain that it's sore or itchy.

Should I be concerned? Could it develop into something more serious?

As I say, it doesn't always happen but she had tomato sauce on chips today which has triggered it and I have noticed it with baked beans before.

TIA

According to our doctor (allergy doctor, I mean - DSs have nut allergies) tomatoes can do this because they contain histamine, rather than the body generating the histamine like in a "standard" allergic reaction. It happens to my DS2 sometimes and doc recommended putting Vaseline on his face before having anything with tomatoes in. It seems to stop the redness.

Thanks Mollymawk that's very reassuring - it makes a lot of sense as it's so occasional I was a bit baffled tbh

my son has that too, aparently is is a contact reaction, so nothing to worry about and very common in children. The allergy clinic advised us to carry on feding him raw tomotoes if we wanted to. He doesn't react to cooked tomatoes

I am supposedly allergic to tomatoes.
My mum has just always told me and as such I haven't tried to eat them, but weirdly enough, only raw ones, I never had an issue with them cooked in meals or sauces etc just raw tomatoes.
When I was a child a few times I was given toms and my face would get rashy and my neck swell a bit, but nothing too serious.
I am now 27, have no other allergies so hopefully it's not something to be too concerned about.

DS also has this. It doesn't seem to bother him so I don't think it is itchy. Good idea about the vaseline

dd has this, but as she adores tomatoes we have persevered and over time (she's now 2.5) the reaction seems to have got less severe. I think nursery think I'm the worst mother in the world for continuing to let her have them despite the reaction but it doesn't seem to bother her that much, it's getting better not worse and I understand it's fairly common.

My youngest dd was like this - she has many other proper allergies causing vomiting but the tomato is more of an intolerance.
She suffered with a reaction whether raw or cooked. It also made her eczema worse.
When she was about 2 I tried again and she is fine now.
You can either keep trying or just avoid for now and then try again in a few months.
