Dairy Allergic, weaning from breast - what drink?

DS is coming up 1. He is dairy allergic - I still breastfeed morning and night and would like to stop. I have Prosobee soya formula which he won't touch. I wouldn't either TBH if it tastes how it smells!

He will however drink the M & S Soya Drink BUT I think that is not recommended as a main drink at 1? Anyone know if true or not?

After a slow start he has a really healthy appetite and eats an enormous amount of proper food. Does he actually need a milk substibute?

Any ideas/hints/tips?

PS Also allergic to goats and sheeps milk.

When I stopped breast-feeding my ds (also dairy allergic) was moved on to soya formula, then at my request to Pepti (cows milk formula modified for dairy allergic kids).

It took a couple of weeks to get him used to each new formula but at a year at least it wasn't his main source of nutrition.

I was told that soya/oat milk was not a good substitute for the under 2s as its not as nutritious BUT the dietician also said that if he refused the formulaes then we could look at fortifying it with vitamins (again a bit complicated cause many vitamin solutions use peanut oil and he's allergic to peanuts).

It might be worth trying different formulaes cause some taste worse than others.

Hey thanks wb. We are going to see paed and dietician next month so I will discuss then.

I have be given some granulated supplement (Seravit)to get around the peanut oil thing to add to his drinks but as it has iron in it tastes awful too and he just won't entertain it. Fussy bugger!

I thought the soya drinks weren't recommended so good to have that confirmed.

I am really hoping the wee bugger grows out of this soon.....

How much do you really think they need milk as such?

Well, to be fair, the dietician told me that there was no conclusive evidence that giving soya formula was a problem - I was worried because of various reports about potential problems caused by huge increases of soya in our diets, plus the fact that it is a very common allergen in its own right. He still does get soya yogurt and cheese (and of course its in bread etc) but the formula was a bridge too far for me.

I'm not sure milk is that essential after a year but ds was small and light at 1yr and it made me feel better to have some to give him on the days he wasn't eating much (even though I never gave him the pint a day my health visitor recommended or he stopped eating solids altogether). He is now, at nearly 2, average height and v. light but I've accepted that that is how nature intended him and don't let the health visitor stress me about it any more. Will probably discontinue formula at 2 and go down the fortified oat milk route.

Ooh fortified oat milk - will have to have a look at that. See DS is built like a prop forward and eats like a horse - really he consumes vats of food in a day - and I find that diffcult to reconcile with him needing to drink some form of milk substitute too.

I might try a bit harder to get some of the Seravit into him and then take it from there.

Thanks for your help.

I was looking for a substitute for my DD, who is dairy & soya intolerant. I asked about Oat milk or rice milk as a drink and the dietician said this is not recommended for under 2's due to the poor mineral content (although it's calcium fortified there are lots of other things missing).

Looks like I have to stick with the nutramigen.
