Allergies and intolerances

Allergies in the older child - what do you do when they have outgrown the main ones but then other, more unusual ones start appearing?

I'm just pondering whether I should do anything about this or not.

Short history - dd had a milk, soya and egg allergy diagnosed as a baby (egg positive in blood and the worst one). She's a very atopic child - has mild asthma and eczema but both are getting better with age. She outgrew them all (egg by the time she was 5/6, the others earlier).

On Saturday, she slept over at someone's house. It sounds like they all had calamari. She had one bite, knew straight away that something wasn't right and stopped eating. Her mouth became itchy and she felt sick but she didn't have a full blown reaction.

When we got her on Sunday, she was very pale and had a very nasty upset tummy till about Tuesday (everyone else who ate it was fine - this is a very typical post allergic reaction for her).

Now, I imagine there's a chance that she has a problem with squid but I don't know if we should just avoid seafood (it's not like she's going to be exposed to it a lot anyway) or whether I should, at some point, take her back to get tested.

I'm fairly laid back about her having allergies as dh still has his egg and chicken allergy so I have no problem avoiding foods if necessary iyswim.

join the queue for more allergy tests. Itchy mouthy can be first sign of anaphylactic reaction developing so you need to find out how bad it is and whether she needs to have an epipen, or at least piriton, around. Encourage her to test new food on her skin before eating it and try to get her to telephone you if she does react.

do you think squid is a main one though? (I mean, I am going to find it cropping up all over the place)

yes, the itchy mouth worried me - was her first sign of the egg one so I knew what was coming arrghhhhh

I was so hoping we were done with all of this!

maybe I'll rub some squid on her arm and see what happens - that's what we had to do with the egg to see if she was outgrowing it arrghhh

thanks for answering tatt

sometimes I lose perspective with dd and her health stuff because she has lots of little minor things that require visits to the GP (like asthma, eczema etc.) whereas my other child has only ever visited the doctor once!

don't know much about seafood allergies. Wouldn't try any molluscs until tested though www.allergycapital.com.au/Pages/seafood.html

Hello fox in socks. Also don't know much about seafood but would def. avoid all seafood until you get it tested. Hope your dd ok now.

foxinsocks I know how worrying this can be - I agree that I wouldn't do anything (even rubbing on skin) with seafood until she is tested. In fact since she has had previous allergies I wouldn't even cook/have it in the house. Hope you don't have to wait too long for testing.

thanks everyone - I'm just burying my head in the sand about it I suppose. It was so nice being signed off from the hospital and not having to bother going back there any more arrghh.

Will speak to the GP and get her on the list for tests again I think (sob).

Yeah, get her tested. My dd has peanut/nut and we got ourselves used to it and were doing great. We had dealt with it since she was a baby. THen when she was 8 I gave her some humous and, boom, she is vomiting and wheezing and out comes the epi-pen. SHe is allergic to sesame seeds which we didn't know. It is hard and discouraging (and damn hard to avoid, harder than peanuts really). But, we are sorting it out. I think a test is in order. When we took our dd, he tested for everything and we now can be confident that there will be no more surprises.

Hi Fox, sorry to hear this. Good luck with it all, hope you manage to get it resolved without too much stress x
(yes, I know that's not much help but wanted to acknowledge your post as you've always been so helpful to me-if you need me to beat up a 'local' GP then I'd be more than willing )

Much the same tbh Fox. Had another blood test last Thursday but it unfortunately resulted in a minor disagreement with the medical staff who told us we were too early for ds' "magic cream" (to stop the needle hurting) as "we don't start til 8.30 and his appointment's at 9, and it takes 45 minutes to work."
Cue major meltdown from me and he got it.
Just sad it comes to it though to be honest.
Hope to get the results soon but he's had a bad week so we're just watching and waiting.
Hope your dd is ok.

oh dear . Blood tests in little ones are not fun anyway are they (about the only time I've ever cried - having to hold down dd when she was about 18 months and watching her eyes scream with pain, just awful).

Have you got a moving date now?

Don't worry, I see what you mean.
We should move mid July...but let's just wait and see!
