Hi, has anyone followed the low fodmap diet before? I've suffered with ibs for about 6 years and someone on this site suggested this diet.
Any recommendations on what books to buy and any tips on what to start eating and avoiding?

I can't help you but would be interested in any answers. Dd1 who is 22 has been having stomach pains, wind and bloating for a couple of months. Last week the GP advised her to look up fodmap and try to eliminate problem foods, look up ibs and return in three weeks. It seems a bit diy to me but I suppose we have to start somewhere.

She has removed some foods, no more yoghurt with breakfast and she is pain free all morning. The rest of the day is a bit more hit and miss. We have found some lovely recipes which are all low fodmap, shopped for the week this morning and will attempt a totally low fodmap week before seeing the GP next week. I'm going to go with her, at her request, so she's taken seriously. I feel were floundering in the dark at the moment.

She has been eating an incredibly healthy diet for the last three years and is recovering from an eating disorder. A lot of the things she was eating are high fodmap, I wonder if it's possible that she has irritated her gut through trying to be healthy?

yes. did it for about 2 months years ago. gave time for my gut to rest.

gradually added back food that had given me a problem.

IBS much easier and less painful.

So if really bad it is worth sticking to this boring, and tedious diet for a while. BTW my GP gave me a diet sheet to follow and recommended it. You could ask your GP for advice here.
I ate, mushroom, carrot and broccoli , blueberry, strawberry and banana.
from what I remember, and of course no milk, wheat . protein mainly chicken, and grains , boiled potato and white rice.

dull. dull. dull. but ever lessoning pain. so go for it!

I also was dianosed with ibs ( think doctors guessed) tested for other things, low foodmap really helped me, i was suffering so badly. Keep your diet simple & only eat whole foods , veg, fruit, protein & carbs . It is trial & error as everyone is different, good luck xx

I'm doing it at the moment under the dietitian at my local hospital. When I went, I got full details in the form of two booklets (one on food types, one on products you can get from the shops). After I'd followed low FODMAP for 6 weeks, I went back to the dietitian who gave me info on reintroducing foods one at a time.

It's not easy. I really miss onion, garlic and mushrooms! I do a lot of cooking from scratch. However it's manageable for a short time and I'd say I've had an 80% reduction in symptoms. I would ask to be referred to your local gastro dietitian.

I am supposed to be following this diet to sort out what I assume is my IBS (been tested for Coeliac). Is sushi ok? Also any good recipes v welcome as still have to cook "normal" food for DH and DS. (I've got two vegans, one vegetarian and three meat eaters coming for supper on Sunday... may go out)

I'm currently on the low fodmap diet - not managed to reintroduce any foods yet.

There are lots of blogs with good recipes, just have a quick google.

Garlic infused oil is your friend!! Stock up it.

It gets easier once you get your head around everything. My Dh eats what I can eat / cook for dinner and he doesn't moan. I'd suggest batch cooking I.e. Lasagna (lactose free milk), cottage pie and portion them into foil trays (think takeaway) and freeze them. Low fodmap ready meals aren't a thing yet in the UK so DIY ready meals are really useful. Pizza Hut do gf bases and if you pick your own toppings, they can be fodmap friendly.

There is phone app that is useful - search for Monash.

Feel free to msg and good luck!!!!

I'm a dietitian specialising in IBS. If you had told me 15 years ago when I was newly qualified that my favourite patient group would be people with IBS I would have thought you were barmy. The Low FODMAP Diet has literally revolutionised the treatment of IBS Grin. But it can be tricky to negotiate and do well to get the great results, which is why the guidance of an experienced dietitian is recommended. Your GP can refer you to an NHS dietitian, or there are also freelance dietitians.
Here are some reliable websites I recommend:
Monash University
FODMAP info and food ideas by a blogger with IBS
My Pinterest FODMAP page for supermarket products
Freelance Dietitians

I've been in low FODMAP diet for a week and feel 10 times better than I have done in months.

I have the Sue Shepherd books. No need for the recipes yet but I'm sure I'll use them. They look great.

Onwards and upwards.

so after 7 successful days and feeling much better, I had a cock up yesterday.

I was out all day and decided on sushi for lunch so went to Wasabi. I skillfully rejected all the avocado selections and edamame beans, only to forget that soya sauce has wheat in it and is BANNED.

I remembered this after the meal and thought OK no biggie - tiny amount of soya sauce (one small sachet).

Except today I have been back in the land of cramps and feeling very uncomfortable all round.

Lesson leaned - back on track!
