dd was diagnosed with dairy and egg allergy at 9 mnths - has an epi pen just in case and we manage it v carefully so far apart from first couple of incidents no slip ups. But a year ago started getting sickness and diarriorh bugs, kept putting it down to bad luck but kept coming. Last 6 wks got worse until ended up having large or small smudges of mushy acidic pooh every 3 mins - her bottom became bleeding open wound from acid and wiping. Ended up in hosp theyve done tests and we are waiting for results. Shes been on only rice crispies with rice milk for 10 days. Except on mon dietician suggested potatoes roasted in a little oil and carrots and 3 days later her stomach which had leved out a bit is chronic again, bum, vv sore and bleeding and she just cries and screams if we have to clean her up. She is in a state and i'm at breaking point - could it be the fat /oil? could she be coeliac even though negative to wheat skin prick test, or some other malabsorbtion prob. Anyone with experience of this? PLEASE HELP

Have you seen a consultant? They can do proper organised tests to gradually introduce different foods.

My ds is dairy/egg allergic and we saw a paediatric allergy consultant - she was very reassuring and could do proper tests & structure it. All GPs/HVs I've spoken to and the normal paediatric part of hospitals don't seem to have a clue. Guessing is very scary, you shouldn't have to be thinking through the possibilities on your own.

Whereabouts are you? There is a group of consultants at St Mary's in London, Dr Gideon Lack is doing a lot of allergy research & works with two others - we saw Dr Helen Cox from his team. Admittedly I did go private and I did phone round lots of hospitals including Great Ormond St to find out about them.

I read a good book called The COmplete Guide to Food ALlergy & Intolerance by Brostoff & Gamlin. It helped me understand what was going on and how one might go about diagnosing a new intolerance... but strongly recommends that you do it under medical supervision.

Good luck!

Thankyou so much that is a really helpful bit of advice and suggestion. We are on the cusp of deciding to go private and to a real specialist in the field because like you say nomal drs and dieticians dont have a clue and you end up getting lots of different advice. Thanks for your help. xx

So sorry to hear this it sounds very distressing. Wheat skin prick test won't show if she is coeliac. Not sure what is involved with that but testing is more intrusive I think. Sorry can't help more.

the initial coeliac test is a simple blood test for a certain antibody and then if positive is followed up with an endoscopy and biopsy.

Our dd had negative RAST tests for everything, but we have a brilliant consultant and dietician who have slowly put her on an exclusion diet and the results have been brilliant...but it does take about 8 WEEKS for there to be an improvement. She has an inflammatory bowel disease on top of an unrelated egg allergy...but is now wheat, dairy, soya and nut free and is doing pretty well...if she has contact wiht any of the above she reacts within a few hours with bloody and mucus diarrohea and horrendous stomach cramps.

Get a referral to a consultant paediatrician...ours is NHS and has been brilliant
