i have just discovered my 10 month son is allergic to egg and milk products. he has to have an epi pen as his last attack was mild anaphylaxia. i dont know where to begin with his diet. he is on jars as i have always felt safe on selecting the milk and egg free ones. i need to start introducing him to real food (although he has it at nursery) and could really do with some advice on where to start - what to watch out for etc etc - any offers of help?

My DS is the same as yours - now he is 3. I have given him traditional type meals from young, like roast/fried chicken/lamb/fish with potato/rice/pasta and veg. That is what he eats for his main meals now, I just vary the foods. DS has quite a lot of ketchup with this, otherwise gravies.

Lamb is good to give as it contains lots of nutrients, is good for people with allergies and contains high fat which is good to make up for not drining full fat milks.

for snacks, you can try toast/rice cakes and jam, fruit purees. chocolate bourbon biscuits and hobnobs have no dairy or egg, nor do most own brand rich tea type biscuits but you need to check the labels.

I get a yeast flake food supplement which tastes nice and DS uses this instead of grated cheese to sprinkle on top of pasta sauces. I use breadcrumbs instead of cheese for toppings on shepherds pie etc.

Tend to hardly cook cheese/white sauce type dishes though.

Eating out is a pain, so we go to mcdonalds cos you can be sure of the ingredients or alwyas take some sandwiches for DS when we are out.
Anyway hope this can be of some help. I found it hard at first but am used to it now, but can be a pain at times, especially when out.

hi dd was allergic to both at this age, though not anaphalactic (sorry so i might have been a bit more lax than you will have to be) however the egg allergy had gone by 18 months, still allergic to dairy though it has become less strong if that makes sense. she is 3.3

used mainly annabel karmel and cooking for coco (have to pick and choose recipes). i loved the organix jars but they seem to have been stopped now. i copied one of their recipes and made a sort of rice with chicken apricots and raisin thing. v tasty. Like Gigwig I avoided any white sauce food and stuck to meat based traditional stews as well as an awful lot of my fave: pasta with bacon tomato onion and paprika. Dead quick. when she got older i gave her alpro smooth yoghurts though not unitl diets said she cld try soya.

I experimented with a lot of spices and herbs to make up for (my perception) her restricted diet. She had mild curries with coconut milk (thai etc) and anything I ate which didn't contain ingredients i encouraged her to eat/try.

Needless to say she's a fussy old baggage now!! nah she's alright but she also has a cooked breakfast every day as still v skinny. Is yours? seems to go with the territory. How about pilchards and toms with mash or liver with sage and onion and mash! she did eat all that but don't think I'd be able to get her to eat pilchards now. easy though as it all comes in a tin. also jamie olivers dinners recipe book is good, great chicken a tomato/basil recipe with loads of oil and quite mild for kids.

Luckily I've found dd won't eat things she can't eat so i've not had to restrict her. i offer them and she licks and rejects (ie milk chocolate) I get her 80% cocoa lindt or green and blacks. she doesn't eat much of it but at least she feels there's a treat. and bananas are fantastic don't you think?

Hi My 2 year old is Anaphylaxis sufferer, she's allergic to eggs, nuts, animals, Egg is a big one to watch coz its in most things i'v found the Tesco Value range has no egg but be careful of veggi fingers and burgers (not saying your going to feed your little one on them but they are bound togeter by egg) Tesco Veggi fingers are the only ones i'v found to be ok, egg has many names and is also an E number, when you go to a restaurant be careful as they use the same fryers for certain things like chips, batter, garlic mushrooms etc and the oil is contaminated, also i'v found some flour can contain an egg powder and some restaurants put flour in their white pepper to thin it out! Its a headache especially when they toddle around and pick things up! I put a t-shirt on my little one when we go to busy places which says If I eat eggs and Nuts I Die! Harsh i know but its to the point and makes people step back!
