Egg allergy and MMR,

dd3 has a suspected egg allergy. i have to take her to the GP to sort out testing. basically she touched some egg white and she came up in a rash (urticria) within moments. doesnt the mmr have something to do with eggs? should i delay it till she is allergy tested?

If its a contact allergy you can still have the MMR but you will be required to sit there for about a hour as they can watch for a reaction.

i havent given her eggs to eat so dont know if its just contact allergy.

Mumps vaccine is cultured on chick embryo so not advised for anyone with egg allergy. But as Mieow says, a suspected contact allergy isn't necessarily a problem as MMR is internal... you need to talk to your GP.

your gp should offer you the chance to have it done at hospital but even in those with confirmed allergy they usually say go ahead.

my dd has egg allergy. i went to doc to discuss mmr as it is cultured in eggs. he referred me to paed at hospital. we had a fab meeting when we discussed all the pros and cons of mmr (it was 2 years ago so a v. hot topic then). they were going to give it to her at the hospital, but we decided against it as she had a slight tummy upset. i subsequently had it at the docs and then waited for a while to see whether she had a reaction. she didn't.
BTW, dd's egg allergy is to raw eggs, rather than eggs cooked in biscuits, for example. her allergy presented itself when i gave her scrambled egg - red itchy raised rash all over her torso. v. hot to touch. went after about 3 hours.

DS is allergic to egg, and the paediatrician said the MMR will be fine, just the usual procedure of waiting a little time after the vaccine just in case, to be given at the practice rahter than at the hospital. However, they didn't allow him to have the flu vacine (DS has asthma)

My ds has severe egg allergy and had his mmr on the advice of our allergy specialist. We did it under controlled conditions with no trouble whatsoever. My specialist said the only jabs they can't have are the flu needle and another one I can't remember as there was no need for my son to have it. The needle is based on chick embryo as mentioned not egg protein.

I was also told it was okay - and that I could have it done at hospital - but I still decided not to go ahead.

However that was more because ds is allergic to antibiotics, preservatives and colourings. I was reassured on the egg issue, but not about neomycin and the only way to see was to give him the MMR.

I will reconsider for the preschool booster.

Just to throw a spanner in the works- we have been told by an eminent consultant that mmr is no longer cultured using chicken embryos and the one to really watch for are the flu vaccines as they are now the only vaccines cultured using egg products.
