Adoption

Questions at info evening

Hello all :)

I wrote a thread last year discussing our thoughts on adoption. It is here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/adoptions/2385822-Considering-adoption-in-the-future

Basically we have decided that adoption is for us and our birth DC are now 2.5 and 4.5. After a lot of faffing about we have found two agencies that won't discount us based on the ages of our birth DC and we are going to their information evenings soon.

I'm wondering what sort of questions I should be asking the agencies, one is a council one not. I have already had a lot of my questions answered thanks to google over the last year or more of thinking about this ;). I'm going to ask them about the support they offer after, how long the process is, type of children available etc. But is there anything else we might not have thought about?

Thank you

You don't HAVE to ask questions. You can just sit and listen and take stuff in. All the ones you are asking are piece of string type ones. I wish i'd taken my own advice as i cringe at some of the ones i did ask! It's right at the start of the process - when they are weeding out the ones wanting a newborn from a nice, middleclass young mum who wants to go to uni. Having been on here you will find you are more clued up than others there.
But good luck with it all - it's worth the journey.

Thank you. Yes I think we are fairly realistic in terms of the children available and wait times for the age ranges we will realistically be able to adopt. I'm just excited and nervous about right first impressions I think.

Ahhh that's brilliant thank you, I'm sure I'll take you up on that at some point! It's always nice to hear off someone who's adopted with young birth DC with it being so difficult with age gaps and agency requirements etc.

I asked about disruption rates and post-adoption support. But mainly just went to see what I thought of their 'vibe', and if we thought we'd click with them.

Just thought I'd do a little update. We really liked the evening. It was very good, much better than q previous one we'd been to. We got to talk to some adoptive parents which was brilliant. We got a really good vibe from the LA. So we're going ahead! Sending off our register of interested and booking our Medicals. They like to get the Medicals done early. We've also had to chose our references as well so done that and asked them. Eeeeeeeeek.
