Liverpool

I'm heading to Liverpool for the first time on a coach tour in a couple of weeks. It's 4 nights staying at the Adelphi (yep, I've read the reviews...!).

We have a day trip to Chester and free time in Liverpool to ourselves. One friend wants to do the ferry over the river, I'd like to do the Titanic museum. Is there anything that is an absolute must which we should see?

All advice welcome!

We had a few days in Liverpool a couple of years ago. Lovely city. We went to both the cathedrals, which are both very impressive, in different ways. There's a big museum in the centre which was good on the history of the city and had a big model of the original design for the Catholic cathedral. Would have been the biggest cathedral in the world, IIRC. Never got built because of £££ issues.

For food Mowgli on Bold Street

I went last year and really enjoyed the Tate Liverpool, and the Slavery Museum, both at The Albert Dock.
I just had a day, but I'd love to go back.

If you’re getting the ferry, try to make it on a day where the Woodside food and market is open - so you’ll have something to do when you get to the other side! Otherwise, not huge amounts to do other than walking to the local shops etc on that side.

the Adelphi is horrendous, but if you’re just using it as a base, it’s fine. Make sure your door locks properly before you leave - I’ve stayed there a few times (cheaper than a taxi home after a night out), and had issues with doors not being lockable, staff walking into our room unannounced at 2am etc.

the museums are all lovely, and worth spending some time there. Bars wise, I like the Baltic triangle, but for a more traditional night out feel, Mathew street might be your vibe (home of the cavern club)!

OldTinHat · 13/05/2023 21:05

@Bravebunny yeeeesssss, that's what I'm afraid of! Great advice though, thank you. I'm quite frankly terrified!

@Bravebunny about the Aldephi, that is!

Thank you for all the other advice, I'm making notes...! Going to let the friends I'm travelling with know too. Glad I'm sharing a room at the Adelphi tbh, bit anxious.

We're way on the south coast so we want to make the most of our holiday as we won't be bumbling up again anytime soon.

So excited to explore. But very scared about the hotel...!

Anglican cathedral

Absolutely breathtaking

OldTinHat · 13/05/2023 21:14

I really want to make the most of the time we have in the city.

There isn't really a Titanic museum. It's a section in the Maritime Museum at the Albert Dock.
Bring your driving licences and get the Voi app and you can hire the electric scooters- they're fun!
Go to the top of the tower and get the best view in the world.
Get the 86 bus and you can stop at Penny Lane, then get back on (or hire scooters!) and you can go to Paul McCartney's house.

Honestly, the staff there are generally lovely, and just dealing with a huge building that the owners don’t want to put any care into. They’ve always moved us if we had issues with doors etc - I’d check first thing before you even unpack haha! The one time we couldn’t get moved was when they were fully booked during an event, and that was the time a man with a mop and bucket walked into our (fully carpeted) room at 2am haha!

Totally agree with this! They are splendid.

There’s a great little pub in Nelson Street (just up the side of Lime Street station) called Ma Egerton’s - small, friendly and lively. Always have a great time when I’m there.

Also, if they’re still doing tours of St George’s Hall, I’d recommend it - the rooms below it are fascinating.

Enjoy your trip - it’s a wonderful city.

Toomanylatenightprogs · 13/05/2023 21:49

You can get the train from Central Station ( ie not the one next door to the Adelphi) along the coast to see the Anthony Gormley statues, Another Place.
Dont worry too much about the Adelphi, worst we had was a drunk man singing in the corridor trying to find his room. As pp said make sure your door is locked and don’t open it to anyone, same as you’d do in any hotel.
All the museums in the Albert Dock, Tate Liverpool, the Cavern in Matthew Street, both Cathedrals, St George’s Hall and the City art gallery all worth visiting.

ScrummyDiva2 · 13/05/2023 21:55

Mad day out Beatles taxi tour- absolutely fab! So entertaining and interesting and I'm not even a Beatles fan!

ohmustyou · 13/05/2023 22:01

I have stayed at the Adelphi- loved it. The rooms have that faded grandeur feeling. Liverpool is a great city, just enjoy being there- take a wander!

OldTinHat · 13/05/2023 23:40

Oh I'm excited now, thank you everyone! Sorry, I'm not acknowledging you individually.

Still very nervous about the hotel and appreciate the advice. Very much so!

I also appreciate the 'things to do' suggestions. I'm thinking it may be more worthwhile not doing the excursions and focus on the city maybe? And I didn't know that about the 'Titanic' museum!

Anyway, thank you! I really want to make the most of exploring and it's a fair old jaunt from home so want to have a good old explore because I may never visit again.

Port Sunlight is worth a visit. Not a Beatles fan but l thoroughly enjoyed the Beatles museum

WeightoftheWorld · 14/05/2023 00:04

If you want to just stay central/close to your hotel there is absolutely loads you can do within walking distance of the adelphi:

  • Anglican cathedral
  • Metropolitan cathedral
  • All close together: St George's Hall, Walker Art Gallery, central library, World Museum, St John's Gardens
  • Liverpool One for shopping/food (chains)
  • Albert Dock/Pier Head area for Maritime Museum, Museum of Liverpool, ferry terminal, restaurants, little gift shops
  • Bold Street for shops and loads of fab restaurants

I've stayed at the Adelphi once, it was a decade ago, it was fine tbh. But granted that was some time ago now.

ReginaPerrin · 14/05/2023 01:29

OP, if you’re still nervous about staying at the Adelphi and you’ve got free cancellation, it might be worth looking at other hotels. The Liner is good and certainly feels safe (does a good pre-theatre menu in their restaurant too) and it’s right by Lime St so it’s a good base. It’s not overly expensive.

Maddy70 · 14/05/2023 01:39

Liverpool is a wonderful city. The slavery maritime museum on Albert dock is well worth it.

The ferry is nice and there is a museum when you get to the other side which is nice.

You can be in Liverpool at 2 in the afternoon and itbreejs like 2 in the morning it's so vibrant.

If you want a posh meal head to
Panoramic 34. You get amazing views over the whole city

Rummikub · 14/05/2023 02:06

Head up the hill from Adelphi and walk up to the Catholic cathedral. It’s lovely and peaceful in there. Then walk down Hope Street towards the Anglican Cathedral. On the way you’ll pass the Everyman theatre (lunch or drink). And passed the Philharmonic Hall. Nearby you’ll see the Phil Pub (pop in see the gents toilets, v ornate!)

Theres some nice places to eat along Hope Street. Or head back into town from the Anglican and pass lambananas on Duke Street (turn left into the square). Continue down the hill to China Town.

Albert Dock is worth a stroll too. There’s a wheel to ride on. And the floating Earth might sto be there. Maritime museums nearby.

Liverpool One for shopping and the usual restaurants.

If Beatles fans then walk down Mathew Street. Not at night time it’s a bit mad.

St George’s Hall and museum is 5 min walk away.

It’s a great city. Easy to get around by walking. Friendly locals.

And yes I would ferry across the Mersey just cos.

Rummikub · 14/05/2023 02:07

I mean the museum is 5 min from St. George’s which isn’t very far from the Adelphi down the hill.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/05/2023 02:32

I love Liverpool! The Metropolitan cathedral is stunning. The Anglican cathedral is ok. But nothing particularly special. Was supposed to be here tonight but thanks to bloody Eurovision couldn't get a cheap hotel!
