Feeling unsure of gift I already bought for new DP - help!

I have bought tickets to a gig by a singer he likes. Things that are worrying me:

  1. The date of the gig. It's on a day of the week he normally does something else which he will have to make alternative arrangements for. Is this just hassle? There wasn't any other dates available.

  1. It's in a city about 3 hours away. Was thinking of booking train tickets and a nice hotel as part of the gift. But back to point 1 - if he can't rearrange I will have wasted my money.

  1. Is it selfish to book something as a gift that obviously I'm going to enjoy too?

  1. Is it even an appropriate gift for a new DP? It's our first Christmas since getting together.

I know I'm over thinking all this. Just don't want to get this wrong!

hmm I think it depends on the level of commitment required for the thing he does on that evening, is it something he has missed previously? It does sound a bit of a hassle in that respect, but I wouldn't mind a bit of hassle to go to a gig.
That's quite a long travel time, but if he won't be missing work then no biggie.
It's not a selfish gift, it's very generous and he should appreciate the cost and time involved in organising it.
I think it's an appropriate gift for a new partner, if you are sure he will be happy to re-arrange his commitment and won't need to arrange time off work.

Sounds lovely. What's the thing he does that he'll have to miss?

I think it is a great gift as it's something you can enjoy together. Could you do a card with gig tickets to say you will book train / hotel once his prior commitment has been re-arranged? That way you won't lose any money if he is unable to sort things out.

I think it sounds lovely.

If you can afford it I would definitely include an iou for the train and hotel.
