AI Thinks Men Can’t Clean Toilets…

Interesting (and unsurprising) article on AI image generators being unable to come up with a suitable image of a man cleaning a toilet. It goes to show that the data these AIs are being trained on is inherently biased and as more people become reliant on using them for information, the more warped reality becomes.

I’m not sure what we can do to combat it, other than keep applying pressure to government and AI companies to mitigate against the bias.

Super interesting. Thanks for posting. And hilarious images! I think like the author of this article says the only way to change this is for “content creators” to generate more of the content that is basically missing from the dataset, such as pictures of men cleaning toilets!

What's also concerning is the people who are training AI are also biased. So if someone confirms to the AI these are appropriate images this is all we'll ever know in the future.

Why do three of those pictures make the men look almost suicidally depressed??

To be fair I feel the same about cleaning toilets!

I tried this on a different image generator and got the same result. Not actually cleaning a toilet, more posing with a generic scrubbing brush not suitable for toilet cleaning.

What's even worse, is I then tested it by removing any references to the sex of the cleaner. Apparently the default is not only female, but they're also Hispanic and likely named Maria*

*Leonardo AI which I use has a 'Prompt Enhancer' setting where it takes your prompt, and expands and improves it to (supposedly) get better results. The long text in the second pic is AI generated, my simple prompt is at the top of the first pic.

The lad in the yellow T shirt looks as though he's about to heave up his lunch and ruin all his hard work.

Why do men cleaning toilets wear suits and look despondent that it was the only modelling gig their agent could get them. And they are cleaning a footballer's house.

But the woman is not only not white, but older and has maid-like clothing on? And they are cleaning a much more ordinary house.

It's appalling.

The men look like you've been hired by some older super rich woman to be the cleaner with additional services!!!! (Might explain the despondency).

I think most of them you have to sign in so it can store the images.

Here's my earlier half-assed efforts with the men. I deliberately kept the prompts vague to try and get it to introduce its own bias. Strangely enough it automatically painted a gloomy picture for the poor man with the AI generated prompt, sweat glistening on his forehead scrubbing 'stubborn' stains from the toilet, in a way that it didn't when it defaulted to the woman!

But Google can come up with hundreds of pictures of men cleaning toilets.

in fairness, AI may have a point!

I have this theory of 'Acquired Male Inefficiency Syndrome', which involves men doing things so badly the first time they are asked to do it, that a nearby woman will lose patience and say :
'Ah here, give me that brush, it'd be quicker doing it myself!

and they'll never be expected to do that task again..😠

See if it can manage if you specify 'man cleaning toilets in a motorway service station'. They always seem to have 'male cleaner on duty' signs in the women's loos.

I read somewhere that the majority of coders and programmers are Gen Z males, left wing, woke, etc and I have noticed elements of that in Chat GPT (which I use a lot - paid version). What I can't understand is exactly how AI got the impression that if a man has to clean the toilet, it's like the worst thing ever and obviously they will be sweating and looking miserable. Yet 'Maria' has a 'kind face' and 'sun-kissed skin' almost like something out of Cinderella and her little mouse friends. How... HOW is that the conclusion it draws, what info is it being fed!?

The problem might be the men training AI.

OMG these are fantastic. I have nothing more to say, except these are better than the women with extra teeth or hands by FAR..

I love the sense of gloom from the last set, like it's some monstrous task to perform (perhaps they've been in my kids toilet come to think of it)

AI still can’t get hands right though. Look closely and they’re always “off” in some way.

I use Gemini, which won't do whole people unless you pay, but when given the prompt "draw someone cleaning a toilet" produced what looks like a rather masculine pair of forearms doing all the right things! Score one for Gemini, I think.
