Following on from last year's successful awards I welcome you to the "OFFICIAL" FWR's Women of the Year Award 2021 nominations.

These were the guidelines set out by @ErrolTheDragon last year:

*No fictional women
*Women valued for something more than appearance or entertainment value
*Can (should?) include women who we don't all agree with or necessarily admire (my addition - but most of us would)
My addition: goes without saying women=adult human female.

It could include:

A) FWR heroes, some of whom won't be widely known.
B) women who you might expect to see a women of the year list in a serious newspaper. If they might figure in a 'people of the year' list or, women of the year list.

All category winners will be announced on 31 December.

Please nominate women in the categories and, if you have time, say why you admire them.

Just to be absolutely clear, these categories are ones I came up with last year (after asking ErrolTheDragon). You may or may not agree with them. Please add another category if you think the list needs it and add your nomination.

Academic of the Year
Tireless Campaigner
Freedom of Speech
International
Law, Policy & Politics
Law, Policy & Politics (Scotland)
Science, Medicine and Health
Writing and Journalism
Media and Entertainment
Courage Calls to Courage Award - For Outstanding Courage

The overall winner will be the woman who gets the most votes.

FWR WOMAN OF THE YEAR 2021 – tba on 31 December (last year's overall Winner was Keira Bell)

Courage Calls To Courage: Birdy Rose (aka The Famous Artist Birdy Rose) who has tirelessly and artistically made her point over and over despite it alienating her from a lot of her social circle and causing her loads of shit!

SerfNTerf · 15/12/2021 21:36

I feel like there should be some sort of Own Goal category, kind of like the Darwin Awards, for someone who has accidentally done our work for us...

MintMe · 15/12/2021 21:38

Tireless campaigner - has to be Maya or Keira. Such such important cases. And I'm not taking anything away from Joanne, but these are women with normal lives and livelihoods who have taken the first difficult step that we can all follow.

For me, Keira has not just dealt with the backlash of her case, but also the trauma of destransitioning. For me, the pressure heaped on her young shoulders makes her my heroine of the year.

shakingmytambourineatyou · 15/12/2021 21:38

Julia Hartley Brewer. Journalism or Media. Tough, intelligent, knowledgeable and regardless of whether you agree with her or not, extremely admirable imo.

Also voting for JKR for courage calls to courage. Her reach is huge and I hope that the backlash she still receives and the conflict it causes in her younger fans ("I'm supposed to hate her but she created these characters I grew with and identified with") has an upside in forcing them to question the narrative and think critically about what is happening, what the agenda is and who is controlling it.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 15/12/2021 21:49

Outstanding Courage... all the Women of Afghanistan, both those who escaped, and those who are having to live under the new regime.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 15/12/2021 21:53

So many wonderful women to choose from:

Writing and Journalism:
Janice Turner of the Times
Helen Joyce for Trans

Tireless Campaigner: Stephanie Davies-Arai (Transgender Trend) for persistent determined campaigning.
Maya Forstater - she continues to analyse, challenge and move the debates and the law on.

Courage calls - JKR - she persisted.

Might be good to have a campaigning group award? We have so many wonderful groups out there.
