...are David and Goliath selling a pink mobile phone cover emblazoned with the words 'I'm too pretty to do Maths'?

Here

My kids are too young for shopping as yet, which has probably made me totally oblivious to the amount of rubbish out there for girls. Is this sort of thing typical? Because if it is I am going to spend a lot of their childhood feeling very angry!

OP posts:
southeastastra · 31/03/2011 18:30

wow that is shitola

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 31/03/2011 19:28

omfg!

is this sort of thing typical - well, not this exactly, but finding stuff that makes you want to explode is.

yes you will spend a lot of their childhood being angry. Well, I do, anyway.

thanks for the link, I've told dh, he's involved in a committee for getting more women into mathematics, I expect the whole committee will sit around the table and weep.

FlamingoBingo · 31/03/2011 19:35

Oh FFS!

OP, as a mum of four girls, I'm afraid I have to break it to you that you indeed spend a lot of their childhood angry because of things like this!

When I see stuff like that on sale, I complain to the company selling it. I am sure they write me off as some mentalist or other, but I do it, anyway, in hopes that someone else will complain too, and make them think about it.

And yes, OP, I am continually ENRAGED and my dd is not yet 4. Worried about my blood pressure.

tigerchilli · 31/03/2011 20:54

OMFG. The more insidious manifestation of the backlash against women's liberation.

Even more enraged as I come from a family of several female chartered accountants including my aunt who has a 1st class honours in maths from Oxford.

AyeRobot · 31/03/2011 21:16

I think I'm approaching burn out with all of this stuff. It's fucking everywhere. Can I go back to just rolling my eyes and tutting?

I'm going to email them tomorrow. There is a contact us link on the page.

tribpot · 31/03/2011 21:23

What. The. Fuck.

I mean, really. What. The. Fuck. Born to Shop and all that crapola is one thing but this? Jesus.

AyeRobot · 31/03/2011 21:29

It actually says "Dumb Blonde" on the back too. Just in case you didn't get the message from the front image.

tribpot · 31/03/2011 21:32

She also appears to be a cheerleader, suggesting the only maths she will need to know is 2-4-6-8 who do we appreciate? What complete bollocks.

HerBeX · 31/03/2011 22:03

Listen guys there is a massive market out there for enraged mothers who want to buy their daughters clothes with good messages on them instead of shit messages.

Anyone got a sewing machine and a retail outlet? Or a friend who is good at sewing and needs a business working from home? She would make a fucking fortune.

My DD had a great t-shirt which said "Girls can change the World" I would've paid a couple of quid extra for that. No wonder Johnny Fucking Boden can charge zillions of squids for his clothes, at least his girls t-shirts don't say "I am fucking thick and destined to be a man's servant" on them.

Jeeeeesus H Christ.

EllieG · 31/03/2011 22:06

Oh. My. Fucking. God. Sorry for swearing but I can't quite believe that. My jaw dropped.

Sign me up for that tiger t-shirt HerbeX.

Too pretty to do maths? You won't be able to get a job then will you love, and you'll have to spend the rest of your life shagging an ugly bloke to be able to afford your nail extensions.

EllieG · 31/03/2011 22:14

Just emailed Littlewoods - good idea AyeRobot. Am going to email David and Goliath tomorrow too.

madwomanintheattic · 31/03/2011 22:15

[email protected]

on your marks - let's get this mysogynistic tat removed from sale.

tribpot · 31/03/2011 22:17

I've emailed Littlewoods to ask how this is in line with their equality policy.

yama · 31/03/2011 22:21

I don't have a Littlewoods account but have emailed to complain anyway.

yama · 31/03/2011 22:25

Have had a return email stating that I will get a response within 24 hours.

HerBeX · 31/03/2011 22:59

OK I submitted the following review:

Your Review: Instant SATs Failure. Brilliant
By Layla Lipsticklover from On the floor on 31/3/2011

Pros: Knows only looks matter, Her self esteem dropped, She stopped homeworkCons: Teacher confiscated itBottom Line:Yes, I would recommend this to a friendI used this item to ensure that my daughter knows that the most important thing about her is her looks and that maths are only for ugly girls and geeks who will have to take comfort in the fact that they run their own companies when they're grown up, instead of having a lovely husband.

Up until I bought the product, my daughter was being brainwashed by her wretched teachers, into thinking that doing well at school was important. Now she knows that all the academic qualifications in the world, won't alter the fact that she is just a girl and will be just a woman and it doesn't matter how good she is at maths, she's here to serve a man.

Thank goodness for this type of product, it helps fight all that new fangled modern nonsense about girls being as good as boys. Keep them coming, we don't want girl's expectations to get too high, do we?

Accessories I Recommend
?Prn star in waiting T-shirt
?Doormat t-shirt
?I'm going to fail my GCSE's t-shirt
Similar Products I Own
?Chastity belt
?Skyscraper heels
?Cupcake holder

I expect they will reject it...

spiderslegs · 31/03/2011 23:07

I am speechless - I really can't think what the misandrist equivalent may be - horrid, vile & utterly repugnant.

How have we decided, as a society, that this is even acceptable?

It's not even the sexism that bothers me so much as the fact that to be interested in maths (or any academic endeavour) is the mark of someone who's socially inadequate. Gender exclusive, as presumably, this is meant to attract the boys who also think maths is irrelevant.

Fantastic review HerbeX. Order me a tiger t shirt too please Grin

madwomanintheattic · 31/03/2011 23:37

this is meant to attract the boys who think maths is irrelevent for girls.

a 'get your free brainless wife here' flashing neon sign to stop you accidentally getting shacked up with a woman who might have an opinion.

i am loving the review.

i'm slightly frightened to look at their other products though... i suspect some of them bear a scary resemblance to the spoof version.

sharbie · 31/03/2011 23:45

ahem they also do stuff about horrid boys too....boys can't dance etc
