Period delay tablets? Do they work ?

eltonlonng · 22/06/2022 09:35

I'm going on holiday in November.
Of course my period lands whilst I'm away.
If I take the period delay tablets to delay October's period ...will that mean November's period will be later than it should be?

Hi I've used these tablets (norethisterone ) three times and yes they do work and twice I used them with no ill effects. However, the last time I used them I developed huge anxiety and low mood which pretty much spoiled my holiday and big birthday. I felt like I turned into a completely different and irrational person. I will never use them again as a result of this. I had not realised they can cause these kinds of mental symptoms and carried on taking them after the anxiety started; if I had been aware this could happen I would have stopped taking them at the first sign.

I just want everyone to be aware that this can happen.

SeaneenM999 · 22/06/2022 09:50

I was exactly the same. Took these on holiday a few years ago to stop my period and they didn't work, still bled and gave me huge anxiety. It was horrendous. I would never take them again.

AnyFucker · 22/06/2022 09:54

They have worked 100% in stopping a period for me but I felt anxious and ragey on them (noresthisterone)

Horrible things

HappilyHadesBound · 22/06/2022 09:54

Myself and my dd have both used these, totally successfully and without any side effects!

eltonlonng · 22/06/2022 09:55

Oh no maybe the period would be a better option then.
If I was to take them in October before i went away...will November's period arrive the normal day ? Or the delayed day due to taking tablets delaying October's period ?

They worked for me. No side effects and this is from somebody who can't take any hormonal contraception and is on medication for heavy periods.

CluelessHamster · 22/06/2022 10:05

I have taken them when I was younger with no side affects. DD was also fine with them. Her next period was much heavier and more painful than usual but she thought it was worth it.

I would try to delay your October period until the week before you go on holiday, Then you should be ok while you're there.

nutmegx · 25/06/2022 19:22

I took for a holiday and felt suicidal and very full of pmt. I was relieved to have my period.

duckme · 25/06/2022 19:24

Could you not try them in September so that you have a couple of months to get over them
In time for you holiday?

Elliejane · 28/06/2022 20:41

I took these tablets years ago to stop my period over holiday . I was a nightmare on that holiday really tearful , so anxious and snappy with children . It was only after I realised it was the tablets . Everyone is different but I would rather have a period anytime over that feelings

Roseglen84 · 28/06/2022 20:44

I took them for a beach holiday, and although I didn't bleed I still got cramps and bloating and felt pretty crap. Also, as soon as I stopped taking them I had the most horrendous period ever, ended up staying in bed for a few days. Not sure it was worth it to be honest.

BG2015 · 01/07/2022 05:56

I took Northisterone long term whilst waiting for a hysterectomy.
They worked brilliantly. I had no side effects whatsoever with them. I took them for about 7 months.

cliffdiver · 01/07/2022 06:13

I have friends who've used them with awful side effects (same as mentioned above).

When I wanted to delay a period, I asked to be put on the contraceptive pill and stopped taking it after the holiday - it worked fine, but I don't think if it's a recommended method.

Pixilicious1 · 01/07/2022 06:14

Just taken them recently. Worked fine, no side effects. My next period was a lot heavier than usual for the first 2 days and yes it has pushed all my subsequent periods out too.

itsgettingweird · 01/07/2022 06:18

Northisterone absolutely does work.

I was taking it for over a year to stop periods due to adenomyosis and lots of failed other drug treatments and 2 failed coils that came out within months.

But I agree with mood. Last year a few months in I was a hormonal mess. I thought (and some probably was) it was related to my mums cancer and how ill she had been and was. But I have never felt like I did then and even woke one night with suicidal thoughts which I e never had before or since. Not realising it was the tablets I did carry them on and it settled but for short term I believe there is a real risk.

Luckily for me I had a hysterectomy the other day and I showed them last Sunday. I'm starting to realise just how low my moods been for the last 18 months as a fog has well and truly lifted.

I wouldn't say don't do it ( it periods ruled my everyday) but would warn seriously about how they can make you feel. You might need rescue remedy spray or pastilles alongside.

theculture · 01/07/2022 06:25

Maybe you can't have it for other reasons but after managing very heavy periods at home during Covid I realised that I just couldn't face dealing with them on holiday sharing a house/bathroom with other people and worrying every time I left the house how far I would be from a toilet, so got a Mirena coil

Magic! For the first month or so continuous spotting but no big period and it seems like even that is stopping

SisforSugar · 01/07/2022 06:43

I took these a couple of times and still had the cramping and bloating. My recent holiday fell on my period. I missed out 3 days at the start of my holiday and I actually preferred that.

susieshow · 11/07/2022 03:27

These worked well for my me but upon stopping the withdrawal bleed was truly awful. Prolonged, soaking through incontinence pants and pains even worse than my normal endo period

Vampirenotangel · 11/07/2022 03:31

Worked but had terrible pmt and the pain the day I had my period was akin to contractions - I have 3 dc so I'm not exaggerating! Never again.

wingingit33 · 12/07/2022 20:43

Would it be so awful to have your period on holiday? I'm on holiday now and due on tomorrow. Tampons. Simples!

juzzer70 · 13/07/2022 14:05

I am going away tomorow so started taking them last sat. Omg!! Horrendous. Stopped this morning. Lower abdo pain, bloating which didnt make sense as I felt so sick and hardly eaten. Like morning sickness type nausea all day and sooo anxious. Maybe try them well before your trip. To see how you go. You may be fine.

juzzer70 · 13/07/2022 14:08

Hi I have stopped taking mine today due to cramps in lower abdomin. Bloating and nausea. Cant wait for the feeling to go as flying very early tomorow. I wish I had checked on here before I took them.

@juzzer70 how long did it take for you to feel better? I was taking Provera for a week to stop my period while on holiday and have ended up in hospital in Kefalonia because of all the same symptoms you’ve described. Doctors can’t find anything wrong with me so they think it was that. Holiday ruined just want to get home.

hidethexylophone · 26/07/2022 17:16

I took them in February for a holiday. They worked perfectly for me, with no adverse effects at all. My period came a couple of days after I stopped taking the tablets and was a little heavier than normal but not massively. My next period came 28 days after my delayed period, so yes it did knock my whole cycle back.

juzzer70 · 26/07/2022 22:42

Took about 2 to 3 days to feel completely better. Really was horrible. Sorry to hear what happened on your holiday. It must have been awful. Never again.
