Oscars fashion - let's be trivial.

A lovely frivolous thread dissecting the frocks (and the DJs) from last night. Yes it's trivial, yes it's unimportant but so pretty!

Who looked best?

Liked Carey Mulligan in gold and loved Margot Robbie's simple dress in fabulous pattern. Lots of quite severe hair and make up I thought.

I found most of the dresses a bit meh compared to previous years but I guess that's to be expected given recent events.

I thought Regina King looked amazing in her blue dress and I have no idea who the man in the pink suit in this slideshow is but go him!

There did seem to be a bit of a trend for dresses that looked like a skirt paired with a bra - Carey Mulligan, Andra Day and Zendaya all went down that route.

Pinktruffle · 26/04/2021 11:11

I think Chadwick Boseman's wife looked stunning, her outfit was beautiful. I lived Zendaya's look, but often do though it isn't usually to my taste - I think it's how she wears it. Halle Berry's new hair looks awful and I wish Daniel Kaluya had dressed up a little more, he seems to wear the blazer/t-shirt combo a lot.

keiratwiceknightly · 26/04/2021 11:12

Ooh I quite liked Halle Berry's hair! Though she does look thin in the face these days and maybe that drew attention to it.

Bared midriff seems to be a 'thing. Halle Berry's chiffon dress was nice but I didn't think the cold mauve colour suited her really. Margot Robbie's silver patterned dress was pretty but not show stopping. I love Olivia Coleman but thought her red dress was a bit frumpy.
Nothing amazing tbh, I usually enjoy scrolling through these the day after.

Pinktruffle · 26/04/2021 11:30

@keiratwiceknightly I think it makes her look really old! She has such a beautiful face and the hair just makes her look drawn. I loved her pixie cut back in the day, I wonder if she could still pull it off?

I agree with Olivia Coleman's outfit looking frumpy, the colour looked fabulous in her her but the style and length was all wrong.

I agree with Carry Mulagan looking great, I also loved the other gold outfit by Andra Day

Savethegrammies · 26/04/2021 11:33

I really like Valerie Chung's dress, so simple and elegant. I also like Chloé Zhao's look.

hopeishere · 26/04/2021 11:34

I hate Halle's hair. Vanessa Kirby's make up was dreadful.

Reece and Emeralds hair looked greasy.

There were no "wow" dresses for me.

KFleming · 26/04/2021 11:36

I really liked Carey Mulligan’s dress, that was probably my favourite

Pinktruffle · 26/04/2021 11:41

Reece Witherspoon's dress looked like a rehash of one that Kate Winslet wore a few years back.

Taikoo · 26/04/2021 11:42

So many amazing designers to choose from.
So much money at their disposal.
So many amazingly shitey dresses, year after year after year.
Who's dressing them?
Stevie Wonder?
Just shows money cannot to buy taste or dress sense.

MrsMaizel · 26/04/2021 11:44

Love Carey Mulligan's dress - making the most of her shape . Such a wonderful actress too .

KillingMeDeftly · 26/04/2021 11:44

@Pinktruffle It's also very similar to one Reese herself wore a few years ago, in blue.

KillingMeDeftly · 26/04/2021 11:48

I liked Marlee Matlin's Vivienne Westwood dress.

keiratwiceknightly · 26/04/2021 12:03

Ooh that's nice Killing- hadn't seen that. Lovely drape to it.

Loved Maria Bakalova's dress - proper show stopper.

Agree about Olivia Coleman. I think she went for a smart version of the midi dress and trainers look that is so London atm, but it didn't work in a LA environment and just looked a bit Nan. Pity as she is great.

hopeishere · 26/04/2021 12:10

Olivia has a biggish bust so high necks don't really flatter. Great colour though!

Namechange2790 · 26/04/2021 13:04

My faves were Zendaya - the colour was fabulous, and Maria Bakalova who just looked like a movie star (which obvs being at the Oscars, she is).

AC12theletterofthelaw · 26/04/2021 13:27

Margot Robbie looked fabulous as did Olivia Coleman. The rest looked like they got ready in the dark.

I would like to see Isla Fishers dress away from her being arm in arm with her husband though. Quite difficult to tell what’s it was really like.

Wagsandclaws · 26/04/2021 13:30

Paulina Porizkova's gold dress was sublime Smile

NoSiree · 26/04/2021 13:31

My favourites of the ones I've seen.

Also really liked Margot Robbie's slip dress type thing.

I didn't like many of them this year tbh. Not keen on midriff cut out dresses in general and then things like Reese Witherspoon's red dress just isn't do it for me either. Bit too fussy for me I think.

PS: is anyone else singing "let's get trivial" to the tune of Olivia Newton John's classic "let's get physical"? Just me?

CheerfulBunny · 26/04/2021 13:56

Oh wow @Wagsandclaws she does look amazing! And really happy. Great make up and hair too, very glam.

KillingMeDeftly · 26/04/2021 14:01

There was something almost other-worldly about Regina King's Louis Vuitton. Apparently it involved 62,000 sequins!

AOwlAOwlAOwl · 26/04/2021 14:21

Too many dresses where the bust area did not look secure enough for sitting, moving or coughing and a lot of disappointing frump.

I did like Regina King's dress - wow. I thought Fatima Fahreen's dress was beautiful, but the sleeves were too long and the burgundy shoes were a miss.

Agree that stylists seemed to be missing in action, but maybe it's my taste. Dunno. A lot of fairly awful hair too.

KillingMeDeftly · 26/04/2021 15:58

Fatima's dress was beautiful but I'd liked to have seen it in a deeper shade rather than pale blue. A deep red or berry would've looked stunning on her.

LucysSkyDiamonds · 26/04/2021 17:18

Also loved Regina King and Fatima Fahreen's dresses. It looks like there's that bloody wisp of sticky up itchy lace on the top the cups of Margot Robbie's dress that would drive me demented.

Very impressed at how many of the older women opted for clothes that they obviously felt comfortable in as well as looking good. While some of the other dresses were beautiful, I absolutely couldn't breathe while sitting in them.
