'Bump on board' in cars

I'm wondering if 'bump on board' car signs are a piss-take? If not, what's the point?

There is no point in ANY of these signs. Except to make money for the manufacturers and make other road-users think you are a twat.

same point as 'baby on board' i guess. Just a gentle warning to other drivers to treat you a little more carefully.
I've never had either as I dont really believe they work, but worth a try if you think it might do some good i suppose!

my sisters bf is adament that other drivers are more carefu near them since he bought a 'baby on board' one, so maybe it does do something

There is a point to the baby/child on board signs. They are there to alert the emergency services if you have an accident that they need to look for a baby/child.

This is why you should only display them when your LO is in the car not all the time and turn the sign around to display child when your baby hits 18 months.

I thought the 'baby on board' signs were intended for after an accident so the emergency services would look for a tiny casualty? Which would mean they wasted their time in the event of an accident where the sign was on the car but the baby wasn't there, admittedly.

Well before my younger brother had children he said that he was more careful when he saw 'Baby on Board' signs. He thought everyone was.

Surprised me.

Sorry Verity, hadn't seen your post!

I think the emergency services would be well aware of the presence of an infant due to the bloody great car seat.
It's an urban myth that.
On board stickers of any kind are pointless and irritating.

Should have said - it's an urban myth about the emergency services looking for on board stickers. They don't.

It's nonsense though isn't it, Verity. If you think about it the presence of a car seat would be sufficient indication that there may be a baby on board. And because they are not universally used, and certainly not in the manner you describe, the emergency services would certainly not consider the absence of a sign as a reason not to check carefully.

'princess on board' BLEURGH!

very rarely do you see 'prince on board'....

Wilkiepedia · 25/05/2009 19:40

Yes the emergency services thing is a myth. My BIL is a traffic cop (boo hiss )

Personally I find them very precious and irritating. If someone sees a 'Bump on Board' sign are they REALLY going to treat you differently??? I think not...

Still - Princess on board or Cheeky Monkey on board. YEUCH.

Report
stillenacht · 25/05/2009 19:44

i hate these ones particularly as they scream to me - little precious daughter (princess) or boisterous, noisy son (monkey)...actually feel its sooooo unbearably smug

Report
spicemonster · 25/05/2009 19:48

The point is to announce to all and sundry in a smug way that you're pregnant.

Always hated all those type of signs, but wondered if it was some kind of hormonal pregnancy thing that made women buy them. Well, I'm 27 weeks now, and the urge still hasn't hit.

Also used to think they were used as an excuse to drive like an idiot. Was behind a woman with a 'baby-on-board' sign, turning around every five seconds to gawp at her baby. She kept sitting at green lights, roundabouts, etc until I finally started honking at her. I mean FFS, if something is wrong with the baby, pull over and sort it out! So much more dangerous for both if she's going to be turned around and not paying attention to the road!

I do find them unbearably smug, so was hoping I'd somehow missed the point. Oh well...

Agree with spicemonster. They're just a way of showing off

I was once on the receiving end of the worst example of road rage I have ever-suffered (tail gated in the outside lane, undertaking, then cutting in and slamming on the brakes - really scared me) from someone displaying a baby on board sign .

Amd yes, second the total rubbish that is the urban myth about the emergency services - does that mean cos I don't have a sign they won't look for my baby?

I hate them. Having suffered years of infertility I used to find them so smug every time I drove up behind someone displaying one .

I saw one the other day that said "Angel child in heaven".... was a bit confused really... why would you need other drivers to know you had lost a child? As incredibly sad as that is, I'm not sure how other road users can assuage your grief.

If bump on board signs work maybe I could have prevented an idiot from rear-ending me when I was 38 weeks pg

stillenacht it may be that there are a lot of people driving around with bad-mannered monkeys in their cars.

I prefer to think that there are just a lot of people working as chauffeurs for visiting royalty in these economically straitened times than that I live in a country where it is commonplace to refer to your daughter as a princess and imagine that the lives of your children are more important than those of all the other people using the road.

They get on my wick. but I think most of them are gifts?
Saw one down the road that I liked though - CAUTION across the middle and 'I Drive Like U' !

can't stand these stickers
anyone who thinks that drivers are more careful around them is probably confusing the fact that THEY may be driving more carefully themselves if pregnant/with kids inside
do you really think to yourself: "Ah, there's a child in that car, I'll be more careful not to crash into it?" Nonsense.

I'm sure it often happens that as someone is approaching a car they were intending to rear end, they see the "Prince of the Monkeys on board" sign and change their evil intentions.

Oh dear I had a baby on board sign on the back of my motorbike when I was pg

stupid huh

what a tw*t

However I saw possibly the worst, or perhaps most honest one the other day that I've ever seen -

'9 points' and underneath 'sticking to the limit'

not sure if it was intended as a big boast or what!
