Hi all,

Does anyone know if I can drink strawberry Ribena?

I have been drinking it once a day in the bottles you buy for the last 3 days?

It hasonly just crossed my mind if I can drink it or not?

OP posts:
WestmorlandSausage · 30/08/2014 13:28

why wouldn't you be able to drink strawberry ribena?

amyhamster · 30/08/2014 13:29

As long as you're not adding vodka Grin

Flangeshrub · 30/08/2014 13:31

Strangest and most random question of my 10 plus years on MN Grin

What possible reason could there be for Ribena to NOT be safe during pregnancy?

LEMmingaround · 30/08/2014 13:34

If you drink strawberry ribena in pregnancy your child will be ginger.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 30/08/2014 13:36

They'll call it 'strawberry blonde' though Grin

OP - seriously? It's Ribenna Grin

MexicanSpringtime · 30/08/2014 13:36

I suppose if you consume too much of one particular type of processed food, you might be consuming too much of the particular chemicals it contains.

ShadowsShadowsEverywhere · 30/08/2014 13:43

The only food you need to avoid are the ones on the list the mw gives you. Everything else is fine. Honestly.

CumbrianExile · 30/08/2014 13:49

Oh no, I got through a lot of strawberry ribena in my first few months pregnant, guess this little one is going to be ginger Grin

picnicbasketcase · 30/08/2014 13:51

I have no idea what possible contaminant or food poisoning potential you think there is in Ribena. If you were happy to drink sugary cordial before you were pregnant, why wouldn't you be afterwards?

squizita · 30/08/2014 14:09

I am ginger. I lived on 'bina and ginger tea in early pregnancy. Grin wonder if there's a link?

No seriously, as someone with health anxiety the way pregnancy risks are exaggerated and woo bollocks is flung around is a feminist and mental health issue. It leads to anxiety, women feeling guilty if something did go awry, women feeling under pressure to limit their lives lest they be labelled "bad mums". At the other extreme it's like the boy who cried wolf... Some women might not be able to - or might just get frustrated by- woo/stupid advice v sensible advice. So might just ignore it all including common sense like avoiding liver.
Just use the NHS advice: it is tailored to British food hygiene laws, best outcomes for babies and is practical day to day.
Adhering to scare stories actually makes life harder both for you and all pregnant women.

Oh, and for all the "but what if..." and "just in case" fans: I know what I know because I've had losses so really looked into why bad things happen in pregnancy. Sadly 99% out of our control. Accidents of genetics etc.
Both scary and reassuring. Bit of course it doesn't sell the daily mail (or its love of victim blaming) or get hits to woo websites.

showtunesgirl · 30/08/2014 14:11

Huh? Hmm

iamusuallybeingunreasonable · 30/08/2014 14:17

No, it's definitely not allowed... Confused

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 30/08/2014 14:20

Ribena is fine. It's vimto you have to be careful with.

hollie84 · 30/08/2014 14:22

Lots of people (especially on MN!) are precious about evil additives and aspartame, so I can understand why the OP was wobbling! It's fine though louise, honestly eat and drink what you like.

Woodenheart · 30/08/2014 14:25

The only thing I would worry about would be my teeth, stick to water Grin

littleducks · 30/08/2014 14:27

Doesn't it say 'not suitable for under 3s' on. I could see in a pregnant panic you might worry.

AllYouNeedIsTea · 30/08/2014 14:36

Some varieties also state they have added vitamin a which could raise concerns for some.

I sometimes find myself googling the most random foodstuffs during pregnancy.

Olivo · 30/08/2014 14:45

Ribena helped me through 14 weeks of morning sickness, 4 cartons a day. My daughter is fine ( but doesn't like Ribena) but it probably didn't do much for my teeth. It did, however, stop me feeling like it was dying and allow me to get through work every day.

Worth the risk Wink

Sleepyhoglet · 30/08/2014 17:08

If you are worried about Ribena then what are you eating/drinking!

squizita · 30/08/2014 17:52

The 3 years thing is because it is terrible for teeth!

CoolCat2014 · 30/08/2014 18:51

If strawberry ribena turns the child redhead, does normal ribena turn the babies hair purple?

FrazzleRock · 30/08/2014 18:52

Wow.

PickleSarnie · 30/08/2014 19:47

Definitely not whilst scuba diving or bungee jumping.

ColdTeaAgain · 30/08/2014 20:04

Oh you 'orrible lot! Grin

Baffled by this question so I just googled "strawberries safe to eat while pregnant" and it seems there is a bit of a myth about strawberries being dangerous for pregnant women, something to do with pesticides. Maybe that was what OP was getting confused about....

Eat as many strawberries and drink as much ribena as you want! Brush your teeth though!
