What did you wear when you arrived at the hospital?

You sometimes hear stories how people have to make a mad dash to the hospital in the middle of the night and end up going there in pyjamas etc.

Did this ever happen to you?

I was in my pjs when my water broke, so I had to change before going to the hospital. I think I wore yoga pants and a hoodie.

Pj's wirh my last 1.

I got out of the shower & my waters broke straight away.

85 mins all in, which included the 15 min dash to the hospital.

My labours seem to get quicker the more I have.

For DD1, I turned up wearing an old thermal vest of DH's, a pair of baggy pants and a dressing gown which kept falling open blush. With an old pair of gardening shoes on.

In my defence, I hadn't realised I was in labour initially, I thought I had constipation (stupid, I now know...) so had been on toilet in vest and dressing gown as house was freezing, it being the middle of the night. By the time I got to hosp, having realised I was in fact in labour, I honestly didn't care what I put on (was 7cm by time got there, so it was a bit sore!).

And to complete the stylish look, I was carrying a bucket due to feeling sick.

Midwives didn't bat an eyelid though, bless them.

Had homebirth with DD2 and planning same for DC3 next month - rather than horrifying the local population with my fashion crimes grin.

Tracksuit, T-shirt and jumper - basically what I'd been wearing the night before as DH brought the first clothes he could find to the bathroom and dressed me in them!

I was induced so decided to go for comfort when i went in. Unfortunately comfort did not equal practicality. I wore leggings and a long sleeved top which was fine unless I needed to get undressed or dressed (examinations, bath etc) when they just got all tangled up and stuck to me when I got sweaty.

Joggers and tshirt - middle of night, first comfy thing I could find. It all came off again within a few minutes of arrival.

with my last dc i wore light browny beige trousers and a t shirt, by the time i got there my waters had exploded over the whole lot so i looked fab... I had to change straight away anyway.

Yoga pants, amazing h&m stretchy top and a hoody with my uggs. Aka my pregnancy uniform for the last 3 months. It was all I wore that was comfortable.

I honestly can't remember. I was induced so didn't have a huge rush to get in so probably something fairly comfy

A pair of very baggy sweat pants and a tee shirt with the message, 'Pigs can fly, the earth is flat and nuclear power is safe' I still have it, 25 years later!

Another yoga pants and hoody. I seem to remember not putting any knickers on as I knew they'd be coming off as soon as I got to the hospital and it was one less thing to lose!!!

I can't exactly remember with my first though I have a vague recollection of my mum asking me if I wanted to change before leaving for the hospital - think I had some pj bottom/lounge pants/yoga pants on - actually, DH may have asked too and I may have snapped that I did not want to change.

With no. 2, I remember the morning of the day I went into labour I decided to put on the most labour-inconvenient clothes to tempt fate! smile So on the day I had my pregnancy jeans (tightish at that point of the pregnancy) and a non-stretchy top. It clearly did the trick. I did switch from jeans to skirt before leaving for the hospital. It was dark and lashing rain and I had a skirt and sandals/flip flops on.

Tshirt and denim skirt with single strap Birkenstocks - didn't get changed.

Maxi dress, baggy jumper and no tights, in March. I got out of the bath and could barely put my pants on, hence the dress because I could just pull it over my head.

DH's pj trousers and big t-shirt, came off fairly quickly when got to hospital as my waters broke when I climbed on the bed, so ended up in a gown.

Midwives made some snooty comment about what I was wearing, but I couldn't have cared less, comfort was more important when contracting every 2 minutes.

Can't remember with first dc as was induced, so something fairly normal I expect.
With dc2, my waters broke over my only clean pair of maternity trousers so I turned up in Dh's cycling shorts (to hold a few maternity pads in), a sarong and trainers blush <fetching>

Rosa Sun 12-Feb-12 09:48:31

DD1 the only pair of trousers I had left as my waters broke over 1 then I leaked more over No2 and on way to hosp leaked in them as well. Big coat and jumper.
DD2 TRacksuit as only think that could fit on, big coat .

alorsmum Sun 12-Feb-12 09:53:24

DD1 Hideous pj pants with a massive waistband that came over my bump. A baggy gray top. Couldn't have really told whether I was dressed or in PJs. It was an April heatwave when DD1 was born so didn't need coat or other layers. I went in an ambulance after trying for a home birth so I didn't need to walk through the car park.

DD2 honestly do not have a clue. Was 18 days overdue can't remember anything about what I wore before labour, during labour or in the three days I stayed in hosp except where I have photos post birth. Remember the journey to hosp being tricky, clinging onto bushes in the garden before getting in the car, and rushing into labour suite inbetween contractions. I have pictures in labour but seem to have very swiftly got into a hospital gown (one that gaped open at the back didn't bother to put knickers back on after examinations so was quite interesting view for the various doctors that came in when I was labouring on all fours on the bed grin.

PJ bottoms and a long nightshirt. No mad rush, it just didn't occur to me to get dressed.

Leggings and a Batman hoody grin not pyjamas exactly, but nit something I'd wear outside of the house on a normal day!
To be honest though, I wouldn't bat an eyelid if people came to hospital in their pjs at night, whatever they were there for.

birdsofshoreandsea Sun 12-Feb-12 12:49:14

DS1, I had about 10 layers on, I remember a skirt, woolly tights and lots of jumpers being part of it! The heating had broken unbeknownst to me (was cold day in April) and I had been labouring at home, could not understand why I kept shivering. I think my waters kept going through the skirt and tights (god revolting) but I couldn't sort myself out enough to get changed. As soon as I got to the hospital they stripped me off and I put a hospital gown on.

DS2 I was at home in July, and wore a big loose strappy short dress thing. Very comfy. I took it off at the end to deliver.

ahhhhhpushit Sun 12-Feb-12 12:51:42

Trackie bottoms and a maternity t shirt and flip flops. Ended up in a gown I think. And then nothing.

MrsDobalina Sun 12-Feb-12 15:34:21

Yes, that happened to me with DS and I have no idea what I wore it was all a bit of a rush!! Definitely put on a gown when I got there.

With DD I turned up to hospital in my nicest dress, leggings and boots. Didn't think I was in labour and certainly wasn't expecting to give birth an hour later in said dress! Fail all round on the clothing front blush

TruthSweet Sun 12-Feb-12 16:01:30

Tracky bottoms (I have never worn them out of the house before or since), a maternity nightie, slippers and DH's fleece. TBF it was an in labour ambulance transfer from a HB as my waters had mec. in them. Not my usual sartorial choice...
