Dog poo. What do you do with it ?

This is the first time I've been in this topic but have been reading loads, somehow I think I might be here quite a lot from now on !

We've just got our first puppy and enjoying every minute. She's happy and friendly and settling in very well.

The one thing I wasnt prepared for though is the amount of poo she produces. Its only been 3 days and I feel as if I'm scooping for England.

What do you do with it ? Whats the best thing ?

I bag it up and bin it.

RunforFun · 24/05/2010 17:00

Can you get biodegradeable plastic bags ?

and bin it where though exactly ?

black bin ? brown bin ? or do I do as my SIL does and take a supermarket bag full to the council doggy bin ??

Pick it up with loo paper and flush it.

Slubberdegullion · 24/05/2010 20:57

My mil has given us this bucket contraption to bury in the ground. You put the shit in and water plus some other magic ingredient that makes it all pooof disappear into the ground.

Sounded too good to be true until we discovered the bucket was missing the second inner bucket that makes it work.

Currently I bag it and sling it in the bin.

Slubberdegullion · 24/05/2010 21:00

Did you know you should be able to pick up your dogs turds with chopsticks? I read this the other day and was amazed. It is called the chopstick test. If the shit is all huge and mr whippy then that is bad, apparently.

Why anyone would attempt to pick up poo with chopsticks is quite beyond me. I guess you have to imagine if you can do it.

TheNextMrsDepp · 24/05/2010 21:01

This is exactly why I won't get a dog. After years of scooping my 3 dc's poop I refuse to start all over again. Yeuch.

SlartyBartFast · 24/05/2010 21:03

poo bag, in the bin,

i have emptied the bag and flushed, but not often.

Tortoise · 24/05/2010 21:04

Bag it and put in wheelie bin.

My Greyhound would fail the chop sticks test. His poo is crumbly and a pain in the butt to pick up from off the grass!

SpringHeeledJack · 24/05/2010 21:05

eeeeuuuuurgh Slubber

I think following the mantra "you should be able to trip over it rather than skid in it" is a bit less disgusting

I use biodegradeable nappy bags. Fuck knows why. Except to say I am a lot more pfb with my dawg than I ever was with ds

swordinthestone · 24/05/2010 21:05

My mum flushes her dog's poo down her loo!!!!

I love and adore the dog, but eeeewwwwwwwww I just couldn't have it in my loo.

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 24/05/2010 21:06

My greyhound has crumbly poo has well. I pick it up and put it in the black, rubbish wheelie bin.

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 24/05/2010 21:08

I think putting it in the loo is gross as well. Plus you're not "allowed" to put dog poo into the sewage system

swordinthestone · 24/05/2010 21:09

really

I will have to tell my mum

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 24/05/2010 21:16

I guess the chances of her been caught are minimal.

tibni · 24/05/2010 21:20

We have a council poop bin on the field opposite so we take our bags over there.

kid · 24/05/2010 21:43

I put my dogs poop in the doggie bin by the park or in the standard litter bin on the street. It all depends where he does it really.

I use dog bags or tesco/sainsburys bags, whichever I happen to have with me.

CaptainNancy · 24/05/2010 23:03

OK... why are you not 'allowed' to put dog poo down the loo? Surely, it's poo, our poo is poo, it goes down the loo...

Especially as there are dogs that are fed on normal food rather than dog food anyway... whatever would be different?
parasites or something?

rainbowinthesky · 25/05/2010 08:00

You are not allowed to put dog poo in teh toilet. It's something to do with contaminating the water or something like that.
We bag it and throw it out with our rubbish for the collection. You are allowed to do this.

2old4thislark · 25/05/2010 09:58

Bag and bin it - I have a poo bin in the card and empty that into the wheelie bin on rubbish day.

Recommend IKEA poo bags as they are black and you can't see the poo.

if you have a garden, and can be bothered...

did a hole about one spade deep, break up the soil and leave it loose in a pile.

throw the muck in the hole and throw enough of the soil in to cover it (if it is covered, flies will not tunnel down to it).

when it is within a couple of inches of ground level, throw the rest of the loose soil in (it will make a mound) and dig another hole. When the mound settles, it has rotted and the worms have eaten it.

best to mark each filled hole by poking sticks in to prevent you digging it up while you are gardening.

Sometimes foxes will dig it up.

If you have small children, you need to prevent them poking about in the hole.

If you have a large dog, a short trench may be better than a hole. you can fill from one end, and extend the trench from the other end as it fills up.

The filling in does not need a spade as the pile of earth will be loose. I use a garden hoe which is also convenient for lifting the muck up with. Hoe the loose soil to clean the blade after use.

hatwoman · 25/05/2010 14:09

slubber and springheedledjack- I've heard it said that it should be "kickable" .

op - if it's on a walk then I bag it and put it either in our "normal" (ie non-compostable, non-recyclable) bin. or in a dog-poo bin. if he does it in the garden (which is rare) we put in in our home-made version of a poo-composter (an old chimney in a overgrown but of garden). I wouldn't do that regularly though or it would fill up. but as it's v. unusual for him to poo in the garden so it gets chance to rot down.

hatwoman · 25/05/2010 14:11

I sprinkle soil over it if I put it in the chimney - so it's a bit like a cross between a bought dog-poo composter and piglet john's method.

RunforFun · 25/05/2010 14:53

Thnaks everyone.

I kinda like the green ideas suggested by Piglet and Hatwoman, and we have a large garden with a field behind so sounds like a trench could work.

I've never bought a nappy sack in my life (3 kids in washables) so hate the idea of buying plastic bags but I know I'm going to have to go down that route when out and about, but if I adopt the composting method at home then that will off set my plastic aversion !

As an aside, just returned from the vets who suggested trying a better quality more expensive food, as there tends to be less wastage with better quality food. Sounds promising !

I think partly you're not meant to put dog poo in the sewer as if everyone did it the amount of poo that the treatment works would have to deal with would increase a lot and cost your water board more money.

Maybe something about pathogens as well. I know that a lot of the sludge from a sewage treatment work is dried into "cake" and then put on farmers' fields so I guess if tehre are worse pathogens in dog poo its not good if its then in the potato field.

CaptainNancy · 25/05/2010 22:57

This has been a fascinating thread... pretty gross, but utterly fascinating. Thank you! (non-dog owner btw... dunno why I even clicked in the first place )
