This evening my daughter started her first period. There were tears and laughter, and l was always very open with my daughters about everything, our deal is - they say too much information - and we revisit the subjects at their will.
So all well in that department… BUT, l don’t have a clue about period panties, non existent in my time, l really need advice on which ones are the best fit, how do l choose, where do l get the best ones…
Also how do we clean them??? And who does it, how many pairs do we need???
She’s not even 13 and quite babyish, cuddly thing with normal teenage outbursts of anger and sadness and happiness.
l’m happy to help do it, but would also like to teach her to be able to take care of it herself, how did you go about it?
please any helpful tips, recommendations, any advice really 🙏🏻
she wears size 12/M adult knickers, my size, as she is already almost my hight

My dd started hers at 13 too. Wuka has been our fave brand for period pants.

I have 4 x Wuka ones, which are great, & three pairs from Aldi which I use for the lighter days at the end of my period.

To be honest I need a few more pairs for the heavy days so I'll be buying a few more when I see them on offer.

I tend to rinse them in the shower / sink then keep in a plastic pail with a lid until I wash them (every couple of days, cool wash with no fabric softener as it can reduce absorbency - I put them on a rinse first then chuck in anything else that can be washed the same, like jeans, if I have anything that can go on the same setting).

My dd uses pads, usually bodyform as they are unscented. I use tampons, usually tampax pearl
Don't know about period pants

We like M&S ones, even the heavy absorbency ones are slim and very comfortable. They come in packs of three
You just need to rinse them in cold water after wear then bung them in the wash
On her heaviest days dd still uses a pad too, and the pants act as a security layer. Unnecessary probably, but at 13 that's what she's most comfortable doing.

I'm really surprised that you've not organised all of this before now. Surely you knew your 13yo could start menstruating any day now?

What sanpro does your DD want to use? If she wants period knickers, I'd start with good old M&S. They're really comfy and give you care instructions on the label.

@Gazelda
Well l did talk about it with them, l bought daily pads and ones with the wings, showed them how to use them and they had them in their school bags since they were 10. But l didn’t see the point in buying the pants as their bodies are changing so much, if l bought them when she was 10 they wouldn’t fit, so buying in advance seemed like total waste of money.
Now we are there, l’m just asking for best fit ones and how you actually use them as l never did, and since giving birth l am on birth control that stopped my periods completely 🙌 so no experience with pants, l always used pads and tampons.
For now she absolutely wouldn’t be comfortable using tampons.
Anyway, l was really proud of myself for explaining everything in detail so they are not scared or stressed out, but it seems that it is not enough, l had to prepare stash of different size/shape pants as well.
