Sounds blardy lovely all the same

Ahhh well ILs garden (HUGE) is our venue - in the borders in Scotland - surrounded by hills, rivers, sheep and midges <<spots flaw in plan>>

if you could ask ghosty that'd be fab.

CrystalP - i've heard they are great fun, but having never seen one, i'm a bit unsure as to what to expect.

What is your actual budget? We had an irish ceilidh band at our wedding and I think it was four people plus a caller (to teach the dancing and shout the instructions) and I think it was around £450...but it was worth ABSOLUTELY EVERY PENNY - the atmosphere was fantastic and every single person from toddlers to OAPs were up and joining in.

What about something like that?

I know a half decent live band! Do you have one in mind? What type of music are you looking for? And perhaps I should actually read the thread?

VVV - my BIL plays in a Skiffle band ... they are really good and good fun for a wedding (washboards, spoons etc - anything they can get their hands on - BIL plays the Mandolin)
A great bunch of guys ... in their 40s, been playing for years, very experience musicians but do it for a laugh.
They played at my sister's wedding ... had everyone up dancing.

Shall I put you in touch? I don't know how much they are.

aaah..but I was in Student band and we were SHIT ad we wold have lied to get the gig, any gig and we would have drunk the bar dry between sets. students and weddings - bad combo.

At my last wedding we had a great band - but ExH had loads of music connections. The style of band was great though - sort of jazz, salsa, fusion thing - I would really recomend it for a grown up evening do.

For my next wedding (in June) we are having an outdoors, chilled, hog roast, child friendly, Cailidh band.

Student bands may well do it for free just for the chance to play in front of an audience.

Definitely put posters up in the SU.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Hayls on Wed 14-Mar-07 20:48:43
I'd ring/email the student union and ask them, maybe they could put up a poster or something
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By JanH on Wed 14-Mar-07 20:48:08
And of course you would only have to supply them with soft drinks, so much cheaper!
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By JanH on Wed 14-Mar-07 20:47:02
Try local high schools/6th forms too - my nephew is 16, has been in a band for ages and they are very popular locally - no idea how much they charge mind you.

No, but..yes.....

I'll have to loiter around the local tube station I think....its right opposite the local university campus
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By VeniVidiVickiQV on Wed 14-Mar-07 20:41:35
LOL Hayls...not likely.

So, do you think it might be worth asking at the local university if they have any student bands then? I'd like a band, rather than a dj - its just much more fun (says she with a teeny tiny budget)
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By Ceolas on Wed 14-Mar-07 20:40:39
But you don't know any...
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By FrannyandZooey on Wed 14-Mar-07 20:38:17
well write them a note then

what you have to know them first? So we have to find you very cheap but good, musicians, who you already know?
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Hayls on Wed 14-Mar-07 20:37:07
We had a live band but only cos we initially booked a DJ but hten the hotel where we'd booked the reception realised they'd double booked us with another couple. They offered to change it to the week before and cover any additional expenses; the DJ couldn't do the new date so we got a live band and THEY PAID. was fantastic but probably a bit drastic for you... Could you try and confuse some members of staff?
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By FrannyandZooey on Wed 14-Mar-07 20:37:05
I promise you, unless they are secretly very successful musicians just having a laugh, they will be thrilled, and get quite excited about it

choose young ones that look like music students

they will do it for a couple of hundred I bet

Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By FrannyandZooey on Wed 14-Mar-07 20:35:32

DP would probably like it SEA , but NO, not for me....

Im in North London.

So Franny, you just strolled up to some buskers...where? and asked them what exactly?

I could really do with great live music. Can't see anyone doing it for free though....

Local music academy? The only one I know of is in Guildford (don't know where you are)

A brilliant band played at a friend's 40th for free because it was their first gig. They were superb!

We had my 2 brother-in-laws bands playing, one was Irish the other punk. They did it for free.

Do you not know anyone who plays in a band? Student bands might appear cheaply.
