I am so sick of Breastfeeding being sexualised by people.

... what's sad is that (according to the article) Ireland has decided not to show it at all. I'd be interested to know the reasons behind their thinking.

Can't believe they censor this, but allowed Richard Curtis to use the word "spaz" in Love Actually.

I don't think they are offended by the nipple (as Piffel says, they don't ban Page 3), but by the fact that it is being shown in a non-sexualised context. Women displaying their breasts for the sexual titillation of men is perfectly OK, and banning that would be humourless censorship, but displaying them in order to feed their children is totally and completely offensive and revolting.

Think it's something to do with squeamishness about women and babies... not quite sure exactly what though!!

Well I think they are quite right to censor this, I mean ladies - A NIPPLE. Quite shocking, old ladies may faint, teenagers have nightmares and so on. After all, nipples are extremely rare things, how many people do you know who actually have nipples? Its all very well on the continent, but we have standards to uphold here in Britain...

Seriously, I despair, do these people have nothing to do with their time?

Are you classing yourself as someone with standards?

I say Mumsnet should produce a Breastfeeding Calendar depicting b/f women in protest !!

Along the lines of the Women's Institute who did a nude calendar? Maybe should have a newborn in January, a month old in Feb, etc...

Report
jampot · 22/05/2004 15:59

Yes I think so.... revenue for the site and also promoting the real use for nipples!

Only if we can be airbrushed like that other thead.

On the radio news I heard this morning it said it was because it could be viewed as being sexual!

Breastfeeding is only sexual if you are a bit kinky IMO

LOVE the idea of the calendar - not me tho, unless in vast crowd of breastfeeders at concert, queue of breastfeeders at post office etc.

Oh, do the calendar!!!!!
Mumsnet bods - are you there? I love the idea of an older baby every month - would challenge the idea that only tinies bfeed too.

I have a lovely photo of myself breastfeeding DS and a friend breastfeeding her DS outside at a cafe last summer. It looks discreet and natural and we all look so comfy and happy - it is one of my fav photos. The babies are 7 and 8mths.

Maybe we wouldn't have to have a special photo shoot for the calendar - MNers could send in photos - someone could select 12 and bobs your uncle!
