I'm interested to see what you think.

They've issued an apology after a lot of complaints about

Oh FFS.

What a bunch of stupid crass tossers advertising wankers are.

I can't believe that anyone ever thought this ad would fly.

I can't get over what tossers they are.

Honestly, tossers, tossers, tossers.

Makes you wonder where they live and who they live with. Do they actually know anyone normal? Do they really not understand how moronic and disgusting the ad is?

Has anyone been sacked?

Not as far as I know, just issued that half hearted apology. "We're sorry but.."

can't see it so can you just give a summery of what it was please

Meg it's just really nasty and violent. In a reservoir dogs kind of way. Not so much scary, just shocking the first time it happens. Then each further time, just unpleasant. (I didn't watch it when it got to the footballers, I knew what was coming and didn't need to face that)

what the FUCK?

Report
Kaloki · 02/10/2010 22:43

It's not scary. Bit grim though.

The basic premise, group of people asked if they will be doing their bit to save energy (first group is a class of school children), about 90% put their hands up. Then the others are asked again if they will be doing something, "no pressure" says whoever is in charge. Then when they continue to say no, the person in charge presses a button and they explode, showering everyone else in red goop.

People, unsurprisingly complained, especially at the exploding children.

It was a non apology.

You know the weaselly dishonest ones that twisty people do, so it's your fault for being over sensitive: "I'm sorry that xyz upset you..."

Not " I'm sorry that what I did upset you"

The ad was vile.

The people who put it together should be ashamed of themselves (yes, Richard Curtis, writer of Blackadder, everybody is looking at you very hard)

And if you are a UK taxpayer, you paid for most of it.

Fail.

It is just so crass.

Why did they think it would be funny? What exactly is wrong with them?

The thing is about the 10:10 campaign is that it is trying to encourage everyone to cut their emission by 10%.
They do admit that this will be hard for those who already make as much effort as they can, but on the other end of the scale don't seem to acknowledge that for many individuals and organisations, 10% off an obscene carbon footprint will still = an obscene carbon footprint.

In the advert, all those who are seen not to comply (maybe for the reason above) are basically killed - without even being given an opportunity to explain themselves.
It's only just occurred to me that they may be trying to portray refusal as akin to wearing a suicide bomb but it's very bad taste if so and only serves to alienate people on several counts.

HerBeatitude · 02/10/2010 23:15

D'you know mumi that hadn't even occurred to me.

Which shows how shit the ad is, if that was what they were trying to say.

It's deeply revolting IMO:-

"There's something even nastier going on here, too. Look at how uncomfortable the 'dissidents' feel. ....
And notice the reactions of the others after the buttons are pressed. They are not cheering and clapping, glad that the naysayers have been disposed of and we can all walk happily into our carbon-free futures. They are shocked and terrified.
That is the point, and it is the way that totalitarianism has worked through the ages. Single out one or two, go after them with extreme violence, and the rest will fall into line. They may not like it, but they will obey. They will even turn informer. A frightened population is easily managed."

not surprised by it at all. It is just base propaganda. It is the usual climate change propaganda and intimidation. Ask yourselves why they needed to do it? They did it because polls tell them that the majority don't believe them. So they spend money to turn things around, by brainwashing and intimidation. They say there is "no pressure" to believe them, but it turns out that if you don't believe them, they graphically kill you. They think it is a funny in joke, "no pressure". They are desperate because they know that they are losing the argument, so they have to resort to desperate measures.

Just to rub it in, right at the end, someone asks the woman who was paid to narrate the propaganda. "So what are you going to do to reduce your emissions by 10 per cent?" She says "are you kidding?", which is exactly what the polls say that the majority of the public also say. She says "I thought I;ve already done my bit" by reading out the propaganda message. But of course that is nowhere near enough, they expect much more committment than that. So they have the last laugh and kill her too.

Why did they do it? Because they are losing.

good blog linked to by catinthehat2. Encouraging to see that ordinary people understand it and know what is behind it.

Have a search round Claig, that 10:10 thing rightly went nuclear on a lot of blogs a few days ago...

How ridiculous.

The initial 'apology' from 10:10 was suggesting that if you didn't find watching the ad funny then there was something wrong with you.

No, it was just a very poor advert. It was not funny.

Its not funny to see scared people covered in what is meant to be the remains of someone who has been blown up.

Lazy, stupid and ridiculous ad which does nothing to turn people 'on' to the cause.

thanks for that blog link catinthehat2. I will look at what other ordinary members of the public also think. Very encouraging to see that the public are not fooled in spite of all of the media telling them otherwise and in spite of all of the money spent to make these type of adverts. They employ some of the top directors, but it isn't working. They have limitless money, but the public are not the mugs that they take them for.

I think the film is hilarious...but that's because I watched it and thought it must be a satire on the very heavy guilt-tripping that 10:10 and other eco-emphasisers rely on so heavily.

So a very ill-thought out own goal fo 10:10 and I'm not sure how they could have been so stupid.

The blowing up is v cartoonic with big spodges of fake blood, no ralistic sounds, injuries etc - I cna't see how it is offensive, just totally DIM if they thought it would promote their cause! Why promote themselves as murderous fascist terrorists? Bizarre.

"Why promote themselves as murderous fascist terrorists? Bizarre."

good question

Remember the CO2 advert with the little girl being read a story by her father about global warming and how everybody would drown and how her pet dog would drown? It's exactly the same mindset. Fear and intimidation. I expect we'll see much more of it, as they realise that the public are not swallowing it.
