KatyMac · 08/10/2010 22:01

His final diagnosis this time was a lower respiratory tract infection & the bug that grew was this one

Has anyone had/heard of it?

Nope never heard of that one! Can they target it with antibiotics?

bamboobutton · 09/10/2010 10:43

never heard of it.

is this self diagnosis by Dr Google or has a proper doctor diagnosed it?

knobbingnowt · 09/10/2010 10:45

yeah OH had it last year.

KatyMac · 09/10/2010 10:49

Well they wrote "lower respiratory tract infection - Moraxella Catarrhalis" on his discharge after 11 days as an in patient - so I am hoping a) it's a proper diagnosis & b) the Tazocin he has had has cleared it Wink

But I like to 'know' my enemies iykwim so I am after info

It seems to be a bug that children with CF get a lot plus it causes eye, nose, throat & ear infections.......but I am struggling to find chests other than for CF

Oh yes Rabbits get it too Confused

knobbingnowt - How was/is he? Did it respond to antibiotics?

OP posts:
knobbingnowt · 09/10/2010 10:54

My OH did not know he had it until he developed pneumonia then AF, ended up collapsing admitted to hospital then treated, was then they diagnosed it.

He was fit and healthy and only had cold symptoms.

fine now :)

Felt bit bad as he moaned about being ill and i thought it was just man flu!

stanausauruswrecks · 09/10/2010 10:55

yep, have heard of it as a cause for RTI's. Treatable with anitb's but can't remember which ones Blush

Bamboobutton - AFAIK google is not yet able to culture bacteria and identify specific strains via ones keyboard.

knobbingnowt · 09/10/2010 10:55

Yeah antibiotics did the trick :)

He needed shocking several times due to the AF.

KatyMac · 09/10/2010 10:56

Glad he's OK

Was he poorly long? (& was he very fit & healthy before)

Sorry to be so nosy

knobbingnowt · 09/10/2010 10:57

Seemed like forever Wink

Was ill for about 4 weeks then it took about 3months till he was back to normal.

Was fine before fit healthy, goes gym eats well etc.. He is a doctor himself and didnt see that one coming :)

KatyMac · 09/10/2010 10:59

Men are awful aren't they?

Glad he's OK now

DH has recurrent chest infections but they have mainly been haemophilus influenzae; this is a new one & I'm curious about it

It sounds like a doozy

OP posts:
knobbingnowt · 09/10/2010 11:08

Hope he recovers quickly

bamboobutton · 09/10/2010 11:24

i was just wondering stanasaurus as dh frequently decides he has ebola or something from googling his syptoms.

KatyMac · 09/10/2010 13:02

Thanks knobbingnowt

It is tricky - it's a new bug but he gets so many

I know what you mean bamboobutton; but in DH's case his bugs are normally grown & identified

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 09/10/2010 13:08

yep, I had it a few years back - had it tested because had a chest infection that wouldn't bugger off. Took erythromycin to clear it (possibly as clarithromycin but it was a while back so could be wrong as to the actual type of erythromycin I had) which worked fine.

KatyMac · 09/10/2010 13:21

He had 7 weeks of antibiotics before being admitted to hospital - so I guess its fairly resistant to some stuff

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 09/10/2010 13:23

I think mine was resistance-tested as well (the perks of working in a hospital lab!) and it was sensitive to erythromycin which is why my consultant didn't fanny around with amoxycillin, just went straight for the Hard Stuff Wink.
Do you know if he has had erythromycin type antibiotics yet?

(and on a side note, how is your DD these days?)

KatyMac · 09/10/2010 13:27

He had ciprofloxacin, co-amoxyclav, a third one I can't remember & IV Tazocin .....so I'm not sure

DD is a bit upset about DH being in hospital, struggling with school & generally a bit down but OK

OP posts:
KatyMac · 09/10/2010 13:28

He has 50o mg of amoxicillin twice a day as a holding dose & is back on that

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 09/10/2010 13:33

well I know mine was fully resistant to all types of penicillin-base antibiotics - and all the ones you have mentioned appear to be penicillin-based. Why on earth haven't they tested his bug for resistance??? Or, for that matter, changed his antibiotics to erythromycin type? (Or something else) - Unless there is something else going on - erythromycin is notorious for being hard on the gut in susceptible people, for example.

KatyMac · 09/10/2010 13:37

He is having tummy problems (but with that list of a-bs he would be wouldn't he)

Well after 11 days as an inpatient hopefully they know what they are talking about & have let him out; but I will monitor him carefully and look out for signs of continued infection

There was also a very low white blood cell count to worry about plus 'something' on his CT which we will discuss in November apparently Hmm

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 09/10/2010 13:43

well an ongoing infection will reduce his WBC - initially the WBC rises, to show that more are being produced to counter the infection, but chronic infections can cause it to fall to below normal levels (immune system fatigue).

Have just had a quick google and the only thing I found in relation to Moraxella and antibiotic resistance is from a paper saying that in the late 1990s, of Canadian men tested who had it, 84% of the Moraxella tested was resistant to penicillin-based amoxycillin, ampicillin etc. It's reasonable to assume that your DH's is resistant to the same sort of thing.

Shame about his tum - hope it improves - if his chest thingy keeps going, ask why he can't have erythromycin.

And forget about the CT for now - it can't be that serious if they're not going to discuss it until November!

KatyMac · 09/10/2010 13:46

That's what I thought about the CT - it's likely his bronchaectasis has spread a bit after a bad run like this

If he isn't dramatically better in a few days I'll phone them again & see what they say

Thanks for the info - it gives me something to work with

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 09/10/2010 13:51

you're welcome - hope he improves soon. :)
