Children's health

Suddenly realised it's all the symptoms of diabetes

DS2 (nearly 4), just asked me for some more water. He has drunk a lot today. And the day before and the day before and the day before if I think about it.

I said "are you thirsty again? And he said "I am always thirsty".

...and then I thought about how sleepy he has been the past week or so, I said to DH I thought he might be coming down with something. Huge long naps yesterday and today, been saying he's tired occasionally (never happens) - much less energetic.

...and then I remembered he has been complaining of a sore tummy off and on the past day or so.

It just now linked up.

Will call for a Drs appointment first thing tomorrow... I am terrified. I dated a guy with type 1 when I was a teenager and he really resented it and sometimes didn't check his blood sugar properly and stuff.

There are blood sugar issues in the family but no diabetes.

Am I being silly? Has anyone here been through the same thing?

You are not being silly, but these can also be symptoms of hot weather, a virus, a growth spurt etc. etc.

You are right to get it checked but please try not to worry.

Also diabetes these days is much easier to manage and the treatments less invasive.

It does sound like it could be diabetes, but with the heat, if he's got a bit of a virus then that could also have similar symptoms.

I'm glad you're getting him checked out. Hope it all goes well.
xx

You are not being silly but do ensure they take your concerns seriously and test him. If they don't go to a walk in centre.

Is he getting up in the night to wee?

Report
Lougle · 02/09/2010 20:36

The good news is that they can do initial checks very easily by dipping a wee sample. Your Dr's surgery should be able to do it on the spot.

His breath does smell funny! I noticed last night and thought DH hadn't gotten him to brush his teeth properly. Haven't noticed anything today but don't really take note of how breath smells.

He has been getting up to wee (or we have had to get him up), and asking for water at night too.

GP's surgery just down the road, you call at half eight for appointments that day.

I think DH has family healthcare through work - I can't see why the GP wouldn't take me seriously but in case he doesn't can I ask to be seen privately?

Thankyou so much for your replies. I have been sat here since the penny dropped feeling like the worst mum in the world.

Okay, thankyou, I am glad it can be tested for easily.

The only other thing I can think of is he's been complaining of feeling cold at night - maybe it is a virus then. Either way I suppose I can't do anything until tomorrow. Ugh feel awful.

Thankyou so much everyone. DH is away and DCs all in bed and it's so good to be able to talk about this!

There was a MNer whose GP wouldn't take her concerns seriously when her older dd had many symptoms and been ill for a few weeks. I think she ended up taking her to A&E in the end where they were shocked that she wasn't already in a coma!

You would have to be unlucky to have a gp that wouldn't test, it's quick and simple.

The gp will definitely test for you.

If it does turn out to be diabetes then you will have done well as a parent to pick it up.

I Hope it's not diabetes, it could definitely be something else but you are right to check out these symptoms with the gp tomorrow. good luck.

Hi your GP or pharmacist will test for you. My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 10 years ago.

I had taken her to the doctor because she had thrush age 12 the doctor tested her immediately and she was admitted to hospital that afternoon. In hindsight she had every symtom of diabetes but I didn't see it.

She was kept in for 24 hours while we learnt the initial information about jags diet ect. At first it is very overwhelming but she leads a normal life her diabetes stops her doing nothing. The insulin she unses now is even better than 10 years ago and gives her flexabilty to eat when she wants.

so try no to worry its not the end of the world.

Does his breath smell like pear drops? Ketones have a very distinctive smell and is a clincher!. DS certainly sounds a prime candidate. If you cant get a GP appt take him to A&E.

It's hard to say if he's lost weight, he's a skinny little thing, still has a toddler tum if you know what I mean despite being 4 next month.

Trying to think if he's been eating less than usual - I think he's been a bit less keen than usual but it's total chaos round here anyway (3 DSs and no DH, and still holidays), nothing has leapt out at me.

Will go to A+E if can't get Drs appt.

Good to hear about kids with it. All my direct experience (such as it was), is via my ex and he'd be 30 now - we were together 11 years ago - so I am sure things have moved on a lot.

Just went and smelt his breath, poor DS (he's asleep) - wouldn't say there was a pear-droppy smell no though it still smells 'odd' to me - not like DS usually smells if you see what I mean?

Calming down slowly. Thankyou SO much everyone. Can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

I'm so sorry you've been worrying!

Yesterday was horrible, rang at 8.30am for appt with Dr but by the time I got through at 8.41am they'd all gone. Asked to see the nurse and they didn't come in until 3pm. DS seemed okay so decided not to take him to A and E (would have had to take all 3DCs there on the bus). Went down to surgery at 3pm and nurse couldn't see him until 4.30pm!

However when she did see us she said I was right to be worried - took a wee sample from DS but it was practically water. However no glucose on dipstick - but there was trace blood and protein.

Did a finger-prick test, came back at 5.9 which is apparently fine.

So suspect UTI, and not diabetes.

I should've come back here before, you were all so so calming and helpful - I didn't sleep at all from thursday night to friday night though and just passed out dribbling.

Thankyou again, so much.

Well that's good news. Is he going to get some antibiotics for the UTI?

So glad for you it's not diabetes. :)
