What can a baby normally do at 10 months?

Just had an afternoon with my ds and a friend with dd similar age. My friend's daughter is crawling, climbing stairs, saying clearly defined syllables; she puts small objects into containers, feeds herself, waves goodbye... my ds doesn't want to crawl at all, only says vowels (sings them most of the time really) and is mostly preoccupied by chewing objects. He is 3 weeks younger and quite a lot taller. Is it just that he is putting the energy into growing and not in a hurry for the rest? or is he really a slow developer? What do other babies do at 10 months - examples anyone? I'm not really worried, as I do think he'll get his act together eventually, but well... mildly perplexed.

From what I can remember it's your friend's daughter who's unusual. Bloody hell.

Are you SURE she can do all those things? Have you seen her?

Wow.

Have just gone and inspected dd2 (16 months) with distinct feelings of even greater inferiority than usual. She can't speak clearly or feed herself properly yet. And her sister wasn't walking at that stage.

Crikey. Ds certainly wasn't doing all that at 10 months. I wouldn't worry - they all do things at different stages - cliche but true.

(And what's she doing letting a 10-month-old climb the stairs anyway?!)

Yes, MI, I just spent the afternoon with her. My DS likes to sit propped up on his little truck because it makes him feel he can stand up; our little visitor practically climbed onto it and off again. She doesn't feed herself completely, of course, but is much better with the finger food than ds who likes to be fed (maybe because I can shovel it in faster). Hhmn, I like the idea that my friend (and fellow mnetter)'s dd is the unusual one.

dd walked at 10 months and could do the stairs easily as soon as she started crawling at 7 months or so.

However she's nearly 13 months now and doesnt say anything. Used to say "Bye" but stopped sometime ago. No vowels, no consonants, just noises.

Understand the perplexity but would worry about something else, like running out of chocolate.

Fellow, MNer? Ooops. I take back my stair-climbing comment, then.

well at 10months old dd2 was walking. on the other hand, dd1 at 10months was just crawling. dd2 coud climb stairs, dd1 couldnt, dd2 was feeding herself (very messily), dd1 was trying hard. dd2 was doing shape sorters, i think dd1 might have been at that age too.

all kids are different.

NEver on her own. Always closely followed.

Report
marsup · 28/10/2004 22:12

She didn't let her climb the stairs but had to stop her. And to think I haven't even started worrying about babyproofing the house as ds is immobile! Hercules, your dd sounds pretty precocious too. Poor ds, is it just because he is a boy? are they really a bit retarded, poor things?

Marsup ... I know how you feel ...
I spent a day with a friend yesterday who reminded me that when her DD was my dd's age (9 months) she could say 'ook' for book and 'ird' for bird and 'uck' for duck. My DD spends most of her time blowing raspberries ... "Where's mummy?" ... Raspberry .... "Where's daddy?" Raspberry .... "Say dadadadada" ... Raspberry ...

Also my friend's DD was crawling and pulling herself up at 9 months ... my DD sits like a buddha surveying her kingdom and only last week began to roll from front to back.

However ... my DD is the same weight and height as her dd (who is 17 months old!!) ... so, yes, I do think some babies concentrate on growing before they do other stuff.

My DS was the same, he rolled at 10 months for the first time and then a week later crawled ... and he was huge compared to his friends who were crawling by 8 months.

FWIW my DS is nearly 5, very articulate, is great at ball games etc ....

Don't worry, your DS will do stuff when he is good and ready!

MI, we NEVER run out of chocolate. This is not to do with self-control but forward-planning. For the important things in life I'm quite prepared to be efficient.

Oh yes, Ghosty, he is good at raspberries, I forgot about that.

Marsup - she has never even blown a raspberry. She is very quiet and says nothing apart from sounds.

Hercules, if she said 'bye' and then stopped maybe she is thinking about it some more and listening carefully. I like this theory - just remember Einstein, I tell myself, when ds sits buddha-like (like Ghosty's dd) contemplating the world.

they are all different.my dd is just turned 9 mth and crawled for 1st time on sun (i was starting to get a bit worried) she does wave goodbye, shakes her head for no, starting to use syllables (but sound polish at mo) claps hands feeds herself and is very good with her pincher grip. but then my friends ds who is same age isnt doin hardly any of that but is walking!!!

they really are all completely different, so dont worry.

feeds herself???? how do you get them to do that?? I need pointers!!!!

my 9mth dd has been quite an 'early' developer, crawling madly since 5 mth, and saying mama, dada, meow (at the cats) and waving goodbye and cruising at 7-8 mths BUt she only started sitting up by herself at 7-8 mth i think.
THEY ARE all different marsup. It is TRUE!!

and my dd is a little on the smallish/underweight side..at 8 mth she was only 7 and a half kg. she looks chubby but she actually is underweight. All that moving about!!

vkone · 30/10/2004 06:55

Well I've just had 6 babies round (most younger than my near 10 mth old and all can crawl bar him - some can even cruise (next to walking as makes no difference) DS just sat all afternoon, watching all these babies crawl all over his house! Having said that, he has the most hair, so I think that's where his engergies are directed at the mo!

Another MNer once posted something interesting about brain development in boys ? can't quite remember the science but think testosterone inhibits the way neurotransmitters develop, or something, that basically means boy's brains are slower to develop the connections that you need in order to talk, for instance, and all sorts of other stuff.
I did wonder whether that means men are always developmentally behind women or whether they do eventually catch up! Will be watching my ds carefully...

Mine is doing all of those things, and many at 9 months. She could hold a spoon and feed herself yoghurt by ten months - yes, honestly she could. However, they all catch up. DD1 was walking easily by 9 months and very dexterous with her hands - but her speech was slower to develop than many of her peers (too busy with her physical development). DD2 is the opposite, much more content, happy to crawl around, nowhere near walking and is almost 12 months, she is also the messiest eater in the world. However, her speech development is amazing and far ahead of where her sister was at a similar age. They are all different and they all catch up. Only if you feel your child is persistently behind in many areas and it seems to be affecting them, then be concerned enough to speak to your HV for advice - otherwise, give it time and try not to compare abilities is possible (hard I know).

By that I meant my DD1 could eat yoghurt off a spoon at ten months - I will be lucky if DD2 will be able to feed herself ready from primary school at her rate, bless her

ds1 walked at 10 months, ds2 is 14 months and only just taken his first step
ds1 babbled consonants at 7 months, first word at 11 months and the speech of a 4 year old at 2. ds2 started babbling at 10 months and still no words at 14 months. Still waiting.
ds1 crawled at 7 months, ds 2 didn't start crawling properly until aged 1!!
ds1 fed himself with a spoon at 9-10 months, ds2 only just mastering the spoon at 14 months
ds1 waved bye-bye at 1, ds2 waved bye-bye at 10 months.
Both boys pointed at around 11 months
Neither boys ever really mastered rolling until they were 7-8 months
At ten months the range of development and capability is astounding. Your son sounds fine....
In my case - two boys - same parents - completely different development. Completely different children. Crazy

Putting objects into/out of containers is the only one I would really expect.
