Names for a girl - what do you think of...?

pluto · 21/01/2009 22:20

Have been snooping on Pgwithno3's thread. We too are stuck on names for a girl. Have picked out some of my favourites from her thread and added a couple that I've been thinking of. Middle name will definitely be Marie (it's a family thing) and I may put Claire in as well).

So - reactions to...(listed in no particular order)

Florence / Flora
Frieda
Juliet(te)
Nancy
Valerie
Christina
Ellen
Elsa

Wouldn't be averse to something a bit more Scandinavian as I'm half Swedish and DS has a Swedish name - but I have decided that's not going to be the primary focus of our quest for a name, although suggestions are welcome.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I like Nancy and Elsa from your list but sorry not keen on the rest

what about

Julia
Violet
Cecelia
Esme
Freya

as a variation on some of your suggestions?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 21/01/2009 22:25

Florence and Nancy are great

myredcardigan · 21/01/2009 22:26

I really like Ellen. It goes wellwith Marie, too.

Hulababy · 21/01/2009 22:26

I love the name Florence

DH's cousin's children (although now older) are half Swedish - they are called Carly and Annalisa.

pluto · 21/01/2009 22:28

Quite like Esme and Celia (rather than Cecilia). Freya was our no1. girl name choice if DS had been a DD. Spent too long with it in my head now though and don't like it as much - and there are a lot of 'em around now.

Juliet, Nancy and Elsa are my favourites from your list, the others are ok; I wouldn't like Val as a nn for Valerie and I really don't like Frieda.

Mamazon · 21/01/2009 22:30

Florence / Flora - my name was a florence and she hated it.

Frieda - meh
Juliet(te) - ok.
Nancy - nope
Valerie - too soon after Whinehouse
Christina - nope
Ellen - ok
Elsa - i know and Ailsa. its probably best of the list

pluto · 21/01/2009 22:31

Do you think Ellen is just going to be confused with Helen? Another thread I read seemed to suggest this.

Anneliese is kind of on the list - I didn't put it in my original post, something's holding me back from it, not sure what.

Nolda · 21/01/2009 22:32

How about Annicka? I'm half Swedish too and I was going to call my baby Annicka but turned out to be a boy.

pluto · 21/01/2009 22:33

I'm kind of going off Frieda as well - loved it for a long time during this pg but now not sure. I know what you mean about Valerie - but put it on the list as it's kind of appropriate for a baby with a mid-Feb due date.

myredcardigan · 21/01/2009 22:34

No,not at all. Helen is ok too but Ellen just seems soft and/but classy.

Having said that, I didn't use it for either of my 2 DDs!

dizzydixies · 21/01/2009 22:36

what about Helena then? or Nell?

I also like Honor

pluto · 21/01/2009 22:36

Annika is good - in a Pippi Longstocking way! My mum has suggested this and I do like it. I'm not crazy about her other favourite Swedish names which are Astrid, Ingrid, Maya and Anya.

Our surname is Malone. Does Nell Malone sound like something out of Dickens? I like it but it could be a bit comedy.

OP posts:
dizzydixies · 21/01/2009 22:41

you could use it as a shortening for Helen/Helena or even Penelope or Penny

but I don't think it sounds bad at all

Helena Malone has a lovely ring to it and you could have Nell as a nn

pluto · 21/01/2009 22:45

Ok - abit of a revised list to look at:

Ellen (could nn be Nell at a push?)
Penelope
Juliet(te / ta)
Elsa
Annika
Christina

RIAchforthestars · 21/01/2009 22:45

I like Nell. Or Nina.

I wanted Flora for DS1 if he had been a girl, but DH said there would be rude teasing and he preferred Fleur.

dizzydixies · 21/01/2009 22:47

Nina is nice too

Flora is all about the margarine to me am afraid

pluto · 21/01/2009 22:49

I think you might be right about Flora, Dizzy. Also starting to think that the likely shortening to Flo may not be right with our surname.

OP posts:
BumblBeee · 21/01/2009 22:50

Florence - nice
Flora - margarine association
Frieda - fried egg association (sorry must change theme)
Juliette - like this
Nancy - I hate this, my mother's name and she is annoying!
Valerie - like this
Christina - kind of boring for me
Ellen - too sensible
Elsa - nice, named my cat this

Nell - ok
Helene - nice
Anneliese - nice

Good luck!!! XXX

dizzydixies · 21/01/2009 22:50

I just think there are nicer names than florence - I think it tries a little too hard to be nice iyswim?

what about Violet?

Violet Malone is lovely

MrsMattie · 21/01/2009 22:51

Florence - like a lot
Nancy - LOVE
Juliet - nice (prefer this spelling)

Ellen / Chjristina - OK

Dont like the rest

Nancy is definitely my fave

myredcardigan · 21/01/2009 22:59

Nell Malone sounds fab. I imagine her to be popular, feisty, pretty and fun.

I think Nell can easily be for Ellen though historically I think it's for Gwendolynn (sp?)

cece · 21/01/2009 23:00

Florence / Flora - not for me. Flora is a margarine and opens the child up for legs spread easily jokes in later life imo.

Frieda - had a horrible neighbour called this so has bad associations for me.

Juliet(te)- prefer Julianna
Nancy - I like this, was my grannie's name

Valerie - not sure

Christina - prefer Christa

Ellen - quite like this but prefer Helen

Elsa - pretty but makes me think of Born Free

nancy75 · 21/01/2009 23:01

i love the name Nell, would much prefer it to Nancy
