Daft question...would people assume a Solomon was black, and is it a problem if they did? pregnancy brain is in gear

I hope no one thinks I'm being rude. I love the name Solomon (Sol or Solo for short) but really helpful people keep telling me it sounds like a black mans name. Now I'm not sure I agree and I'm not sure if it matters but would it sound silly like a white Oprah or Ghandi if you get what I mean? Help! Also any middle name suggestions to go with one-sylabuled surname starting with M. (pref with initials that can be said eg SAM, to please hubby!)

I don't think I'd assume anything. I know a couple of Sols. They're both white Jewish I think. I would counsel against the initials spelling omething though. Bane of my (and DH's) life.

AnarchyInAManger · 23/12/2008 15:58

My great grandfather was called Solomon and he was a Polish Jew! Its my top name for if I ever have a boy.

expatinscotland · 23/12/2008 15:58

The only Sols I know are white and Jewish.

AnarchyInAManger · 23/12/2008 15:59

X-posts!

thisisyesterday · 23/12/2008 15:59

i have known 2 solomons in my life, both of whom were very much white

donnie · 23/12/2008 15:59

I would assume Solomon to be white actually as I associate it with Jewish people. I know a Solly. I dont like the name Solomon but love Sol.

BabyBaby123 · 23/12/2008 16:02

I wouldn't assume anything - the only Sol I know of is Sol Campbell the footballer - not clear why it would matter to you or anyone else though if they thought he was black and he then wasn't!

NorktasticNinja · 23/12/2008 16:07

Great name!

I know a little Solomon, he is neither black or Jewish. In fact his parents are middle class types turned travelers...

TheFalconInThePearTree · 23/12/2008 16:55

I wouldn't and even if others do I wouldn't care.

It's a beautiful name, though I much prefer use of the full version and not a nickname.

MrsSeanBean · 23/12/2008 17:06

I wouldn't assume either way.

Soloman Arthur

Soloman Inigo

Soloman Uriel (keeping the biblical theme)

Soloman Otto

MrsSeanBean · 23/12/2008 17:07

PS Sulaiman is another variation of Soloman in case you prefer that.

pania · 23/12/2008 17:27

I would think it was a Jewish name, but not exclusively.

BikeRunSki · 23/12/2008 17:34

Solomon Anthony.

Nice classic Old Testament name. I don't think I would assume anything, other than he was male!

BikeRunSki · 23/12/2008 17:35

I once knew a Samuel, known as Sam, whose initials also spelt SAM. He thought it was great.

TheFallenMadonna · 23/12/2008 17:58

Hmm. DH's intitials spell his name too. He doesn't think it's great. He tends to miss out the middle initial.

audley · 23/12/2008 18:46

Love Solomon, was on my shortlist. When I suggest names a friend will often respond with "I would imagine that a such and such would be black", but did not get that for Solomon. Great name imo

Nancy66 · 23/12/2008 21:18

Agree with the others - it's a Jewish name and there aren't any black Jews!

either way, it's a great name.

Bedbug · 23/12/2008 21:36

Uh.....Sammy Davis Jr? Jewish and black. Among many others. Ethiopian Jewish people too. Just for info.....Soloman, not so keen, sorry....

paolosgirl · 23/12/2008 21:37

Solomon Grundy (he who was born on a Monday etc) is always white in the nursery books I've read!

ceeceeanne · 24/12/2008 09:51

So everyone agrees they wouldnt think anything and it doesnt matter if others do!! cool. just thought it might be like im pinching a jewish name or a primarily black name but am not so put off now. what does x-posts mean? (anarchyinamanger)
would the initials SPAM be a problem?

OP posts:
RaspberryBlower · 24/12/2008 09:55

X post means that you have cross posted the same thing with someone else. I would personally avoid SPAM if possible. Although it's not too bad if you really, really love the names.

MrsSeanBean · 24/12/2008 10:54

I think SPAM is most unfortunate. Can you change the order of the names - ie SAPM or something?

ninedragons · 24/12/2008 10:58

All the Solomons I've ever met have been white Jews.

SPAM would be hideous initials to take through life.

pantomimEDAMe · 24/12/2008 11:08

Please don't inflict SPAM on a poor innocent child! And avoid Soloman if your surname is Grundy.

MadameCastafiore · 24/12/2008 11:12

WOuldn;t cross my mind to think anything of the sort - although DH refused to call DS Reuben because he said it sounded Jewish - so we called hin Maximilian - ha ha how not un Jewish is that!!!!

Go for it Soloman is a lovely name and Sol for short is trendy and cute but not in a chavvy way.
