i'm 36+4 and hopefully having a girl but am really struggling with names, i have two that i think i like
but one is very unusual and one is very traditional. I'm genuinely struggling with this so would appreciate some input:
a) Elizabeth - you can do a lot with it but i can't stand Lizzie!
b) River - i think i love it but the suggestion was met with horror at work!
As a late outsider Florence is a remote possibility, it's growing on me a bit...
Second name is Green if that helps.
And I know two people with a Felix. Their girls are natalia, Ophelia and hermione
Eliza is the best nn for Elizabeth IMO
Or just Eliza. Less likely to get a nickname you don't like from that
Dammit I didn't even think about Florence and Felix together! however DH vitto'd Florence last night anyway.
But...Apple Green. Thanks NeDeLaMer
Just don't call her Rachel
I don't like 'thing' names (sorry, not sure what else to call them!) like Apple, Sky, River, Summer etc but that alone, you just can't with your surname!
I prefer Elizabeth out of your current options.
Please don't have a Florence and a Felix, my brother and I have similar starts to our names (think Mat and Kat) and it was a pain when we got shouted - couldn't tell who was wanted.
i'm not a Dr Who fan, is there a River character in that? at least 50% approval for my favourite name makes me feel a bit better, even though i feel it is now off the table.
i didn't realise Florence is quite so common...
My DS is called Felix which is (obviously a name I love and) quite unusual but not "out there" so i guess i was hoping to find something in the same vein for a girl but seem to be missingthe mark by a mile at the moment. sigh
If I had an Elizabeth I would call her Libby.
I do love River, but I agree it isn't great with your surname. Also I would assuem you were a Doctor Who fan. Which may be true!
Betty is a great nn. Cute.
Or Elspeth?
Bess is another good nickname.
Elizabeth is a lovely classic name, but I think with your surname I'd take the opportunity to go for something a bit more unusual. Florence is nice and can be Florrie and Flora as well as Flo/Flossie etc (but it is VERY common round my way).
That should have read Betts not Betty.
Libby Green is lovely, I agree with Justfloatingby.
So Elizabeth out of your choices.
I don't know a single Lizzie by the way and I know a few Elizabeth's.
Nicknames of those I know are, Elise, Betty, Lisa, Essie, as well as the others mentioned.
Elise is nice too IMO.
Libby is a lovely nn for Elizabeth and would go well with Green.
I agree with the comments on here re River.
i had the same concerns about the stagnant water thing bigus but was hoping it was just me
i have no qualms about naming her after the dog though!
thanks for your input, although i am no closer to choosing a name (except that it looks like River is off the table...)
Sorry I'm not keen on River either.
Love Elizabeth and gives your DD plenty of NN options.
1. Florence
2. River
3. Elizabeth
Elizabeth is lovely- it has lots of other nicknames. (Whatever you choose you have no control over nicknames and Lizzie is miles better than Flo or Flossie etc)
Don't like River - especially with Green.
River Green makes me think of green stagnant water I'm afraid. I know a very lovely dog called River too, but not a person ...
Eliza and Elsie are also nns for Elizabeth. I like Beth the best of the nns.
Florence is ok but a little overdone in my area.
Whoops, sorry! Don't involve Liz or Betty: Beth, Betsy, Elspeth...even Lily and Isobel / Izzy were NNs for Elizabeth back in the day.
Florence doesn't make me think of Aunt Flow at all. I just think beautiful Italian city or Magic Roundabout. My colleague's daughter is Florence and she gets Florrie, not Flo.
There are loads of nicknames for Elizabeth that don't inv
sorry shobgite just reread and realised your DD is Florence, I didn't mean to be so rude
I really like River Green. It's very memorable
Betty, oh no i hadn't even thought about that one - i was so preoccupied with trying to avoid Lizzie
.
Yes the second name combo is unfortunate with River which is a real shame becasue i really like it (although i'm the only one apparently
).
Re Florence i'm just not sure i can get passed the Aunt Flow connection. i hate being so awkward but this has really got me stumped.
Love Florence (is my DD) and love Elizabeth too. River is a shocking combination with your surname.
Both names are lovely of the two I prefer Elizabether NN Betty., River is not, certainly not with your surname anyway.
Good luck.
Elizabeth is lovely, with a lot of possibilities. If you really don't like Lizzie (I don't know any Elizabeth's that are called Lizzie btw) then you could use the Elisabeth spelling which might make it less likely.
I agree with swooosh River Green doesn't really work. Plus I think of River as being a guys name because of River Phoenix. Florence works well too.
